Record setting performances continue for the Lady Bucs swim team while the volleyball teams captured league titles and host sectional play this week. The varsity football team captured its third consecutive victory and other Oswego teams were also in action.
Swimmers Win Again
The Oswego Lady Bucs were able to swat the Baldwinsville Bees 101-74 on Wednesday night, breaking a 3 year winning streak that the Bees had over Oswego.
Oswego (7-1) put up the top time in every event at the meet, due in not small part to the nine seniors that Oswego was honoring at the meet. The recognized seniors included Liz Baker, Carrie Gilbert, Nina Alcasid, Katrina Tafler, Hailey Ihlow, Colleen Fraser, Maggis Maas, Catie Geroux and Cassidy Taylor.
The meet started out with the best start possible at a dual meet. Oswego’s medley relay team of junior Brenna Riley, sophomores Brooke Morrisseau and Mariah Metcalf, and freshman Caitlin Gorton, all swam their best splits of the season to drop over 2 seconds and finish in 1:52.17. Their time is the top time in the Section by over four and a half seconds, a new school record, a new pool record, and a NY State Championship Meet qualifying time. Oswego’s second relay team of seniors Colleen Fraser and Elizabeth Baker, junior Zoë Ferris, and sophomore Clare Donovan, with the benefit of very strong swims by Ferris and Fraser, was able to touch the wall second in 2:04.69. These performances opened up a significant lead that would continue to grow with every event the Buccaneers swam.
Following the relay, Riley jumped back in the water and took first place in the 200 freestyle (2:06.59). Senior Magie Maas (2:23.77), sophomore Ayla Busch (2:18.08), and freshman Madi Bell (2:29.74) also swam great 200’s. Next, the Oswego I.M.ers all put up season best times to continue the team’s trek towards victory. Metcalf won the event in her best time ever, 2:18.57. Fraser dropped several seconds off her best time this season to touch the wall in 2:33.29, and junior Angie Rookey dropped four seconds to qualify for Sectional’s in the event for the first time with an impressive time of 2:39.20.
In the next event, the 50 free, the Lady Bucs were able to place first, second, and third. Morrisseau won the event in her best time this season, 25.38. Sophomore Elaina Rando placed second in 26.58, and senior Carrie Gilbert took third in 28.06.
Oswego senior Hailey Ihlow and freshman Elizabeth Rookey excelled in the diving competition. Ihlow placed first with a score of 194.90, while Rookey took second in 136.25.
Then Gorton kicked off the second half of the meet with a win in the 100 fly (1:00.50). Baker and fellow senior Catie Geroux swam great races in the event. Baker placed 3rd in 1:11.81 and Geroux 5th in 1:15.71, her best time this season by nearly 5 seconds.
Metcalf’s second individual win would come in the next event, the 100 free. Her time of 55.28 is a lifetime best. Ferris placed second in 59.73 and Gilbert 3rd in 1:02.6. With a first place finish in the 500 freestyle, Riley earned her second individual win on the night. Maas also swam a great 500, dropping eight seconds to swim her personal best time of 6:19.22.
Oswego’s Section-leading 200 free relay team of Metcalf, Gorton, Rando, and Morrisseau chipped away at their inseason best time by touching the wall first in 1:42.80, breaking the pool record in the process. Gordon hopped right back in the water to win her second individual event of the meet, the 100 backstroke (1:04.20). Ferris also swam a very good 100 back, going her best time this season, 1:10.73. Next, Rando won the 100 breast in her best time, 1:15.47. Rookey also shined in the breaststroke, swimming her best time, 1:20.31.
Finally, seniors Cassidy Taylor (1:07.00) and Gilbert (1:02.54), with Rookey (1:07.33), Busch (1:04.80), and 8th grader Kate Volkomer (1:09.56), all swam their best splits this season to help Oswego cap off their victory with a strong finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
“We are very excited to be swimming so well right now. We have been progressively getting faster over the course of our season and I can’t wait to see what the last two meets bring, and then Sectional’s and State’s after that!” the coach said.
Football Streaking
The Oswego varsity football team won its third consecutive game to move to 4-4 on the year with the season finale slated for Tuesday (October 29) at 5:30 p.m. against Nottingham at Joe Wilber Field.
Oswego rolled up a 21-6 halftime score to eventually win 35-14 over Fowler.
After a scoreless first quarter Garrett Dunsmoor ran for 13 yards and a 6-0 Buc lead.
Alex Makin put the Bucs up by more with a seven yard scoring run and the try to two was successful for a 14-0 advantage. Ryan Lavner then scored from 14 yards out and kicked to the PAT.
Fowler came back with six before the intermission.
In thre third Lyquian Burke ran an intereception back 99 yards for a score, but Makin negated the scored with a 12 yard scoring run followed by a Zach Crisafulli kick. Crisafulli capped off the scoring with a nine yard run and then kicked for another.
Makin had 20 carries for 178 yards to put him over 1,000 for the year and has scored 14 touchdowns.
Ryan Lavner ran for 71 yards on four carries and caught six6 passes for 91 yards. Crisafulli had eighth carries for 87 yards. Garrett Dunsmoor did a great job running the option and ran for 46 yards on four carries. Garrett Dunsmoor and Garrett Skinner each completed three passes.
The offensive line of Isaac Noel, Trey Love, Jake Rodriguez, Eric Doviak, Ryan Kearns and Andrew Osetek were fantastic in an Oswego offensive performance that gained more than 500 yards.
The Oswego defense, led by linebacker Garret Skinner and safety Justin Canale has only given uo 19 points in the last 3 victories.
In other highlights, Makin had his fourth pass interception of the season and Jake Rodriguez recovered a fumble to lead the Buccaneers.
Volleyball Sectional Bound
The Oswego High School boys varsity volleyball team capped off the regular season with a league title clinching win over Cicero-North Syracuse and a non league verdict over Living Word Academy.
Against CNS the teams got locked up in a tremendous five game marathon with the Bucs winning 3-1 to clinch the league title.
Josh Carney had two aces, six kills, 74 assists, three blocks and two digs while Zach Gillard finished with a pair of ace, 50 kills, four blocks and four digs.
Also contributing were Logan Krass (10 kills, six blocks and two digs), Pat Dillon (five kills, a block and six digs), Trey Clark (four kills, five blocks), Trevor Bradshaw (ace, eight digs), Emmett O’Brien (two kills, three blocks) and Drazen Schrecengost (two kills).
Against Living Word Academy the Bucs swept 3-0 with wins of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14.
As part of the night the seniors Logan Krass and Drazen Schrecengost were recognized.
Oswego finished with 15-2 on the season as the squad prepped for the Section III semifinal this Wednesday at Powers Gym at 6 p.m. against CNS.
Schrecengost has 10 kills, a block, an ace and two digs while Krass has 10 kills, a block and three aces.
Also contributing were Bradshaw (two aces, three digs), Carney (four kills, 35 assists, an ace), Clark (two kills), Dillon (three kills, two blocks and dig), Mike Edwards (eight kills,four aces), Gillard (10 kills, a block, four aces and dig), O’Brien (a kill) and Matt Samson (two kills).
Lady Bucs League Champs
The Oswego High School girls varsity volleyball team captured the American Division of the Central new York Counties League title and will host a sectional semifinal this Friday night at the Powers Gym at Frederick Leighton Elementary School.
Auburn will travel to Oswego for post season play with action beginning at 6 p.m.
Members of the championship team include Sarah Fitzgibbons, Alexis Sheridan, Carlie Stoebner, Jessica Pfeifer, Shanell Myers, Allie Henderson, Reilly Patrick, Clara Culeton, Madison Collins, Bella Winklestine, Kellie Gorman, Marguerite Dillon and Erica Atkins.
Recently, the OHS cross country teams competed in the 32nd annual Weedsport Invitational.
The boy’s varsity finished a respectable 6th place out of 12 teams competing. Graham Barney finished 25th (19:51) running very well over a hilly, sloppy course. The “Flying Freshman” Dalton Babcock ran to a 32nd place finish in a time of 20:33. Christian Davis was the next Buc to finish as he placed 35th (20:43). Captains Paul Oleyourryk 38th (20:50) and Pat Baer 47th (21:04) completed the scoring for Oswego.
Austin Attwood 51st and Alex Flack 59th ran well for the varsity harriers. “Alex has been battling an illness all season and it is remarkable how well he runs under distress” said Coach Greene.
The Oswego Boys JV team ran to a second place finish.
All the JV runners for the Bucs were in the top twenty. Leading the way was: Camden Proud (10th), Nathan Greene (11th), and Brad Patterson (12th), Chris Pitters (16th) and Avery Croucher (19th).
“This was a really good team effort, especially by the freshmen. I hope this gives them confidence as our next meet is the Section 3 Championship Meet on November 2nd” said Coach Greene.
Due to several girls taking the PSAT, there were only two representatives for the Lady Bucs. However, they ran fantastic races as Meg LiVoti was 16th and Mallory Gordon was 26th.
The next two weeks the runners will focus on training in preparation of the Sectional Championship. “We have already run on the Sectional course earlier this season. The athletes are excited to run that course and improve their times from over a month ago. To do that, they have to stay healthy and concentrate on the next few quality practices. They will be racing against the clock!” said Coach Dan Greene.
Oswego Jayvee Grid Win
Oswego scored in every quarter enroute to a 30-6 victory over Fowler.
Connar Dryden scored on a 15 yard pass play from Jake Caster for a 6-0 first quarter lead. In the second Cirilo Valentine scored from six yards out and added two on the PAT.
In the third Dryden scored from 30 yards out and in the fourth he added a 25 yard touchdown run while Valentin added two more points.
Scores: 8-1 OMS Girls White Win
Oswego White had a strong offensive showing to end the season with an 8-1 win over Central Square.
Joan Carroll scored off a Grace Bruns cross at the four minute mark to open the scoring for Oswego. Grace and Lara Kanbur both scored in the first half, with an assist from Eryn French.
Grace added three goals in the second half off passes from Sammy Gardner and Michaela Bradshaw. Reagan Thompson and McKinley Thompson also scored for Oswego with the assists going to Sophie Greene and Grace Bruns for the 8-1 Bucs.
