The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team trailed 3-1 heading into the third period, but gave up four goals as it fell to Division I Sacred Heart 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport, Conn. The Pioneers scored three goals in the final ten minutes of the game to end any hopes of a Laker comeback. Freshman Lana Peterson (Anchorage, Alaska) stopped 38 shots in her first collegiate game at Oswego State, while Emily Siira picked up the win after making 22 saves.
Kristina Hankins put the Pioneers on the board 1:01 into the contest with a power play goal, but Oswego State knotted the game at 1-1 when Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the season at the 7:59 mark. Karly Armstrong (Sudbury, Ont.) earned an assist on the play. Sacred Heart added two more goals before the end of the period to skate into the first break holding a 3-1 lead.
The score held through the second period as the squads traded penalties, but neither team was able to capitalize on the opportunities. The Pioneers converted a power play chance early in the third period when Kate Dunlop scored at 1:25. Tiarra Garrow (Sr., Morrisonville, N.Y.) tallied her first goal of the season to pull the Lakers to within two goals two minutes later after receiving a pass from Kathryn Sbrocchi (So., Missussauga, Ont.). However, Sacred Heart put the game out of reach with three goals in the final ten minutes as it skated to the 7-2 win.
The Lakers, who fell to 4-5 overall, wrapped up the 2009 portion of their schedule, and will return to action on January 9 at the Castleton State Tournament. Sacred Heart moved to 4-9 on the season.
