Vauter Wins First Ever Brewerton Speedway Big Block Modified Feature

BREWERTON, NY – (By Dave  Medler) – Going into Friday night, Dan Vauter said he has had a season so far he would rather forget. His team kept fighting through all the setbacks, and Friday night it all paid off as the Forest City, Pennsylvania driver as he picked up his first ever Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified win at the Brewerton Speedway.

Vauter took advantage of leader Mike Mahaney’s misfortune when he had to get hard on the brakes to avoid a car ahead of him that got out of shape, that let Vauter  shoot to the lead on lap 29. Then Vauter was able to survive a late yellow to go onto the popular win.

With his win, Dan Vauter now joins  Larry Wight, Robbie Bellinger, Matt Sheppard, Billy Decker, Willy Decker, Jimmy Phelps, Alan Johnson and Ryan Phelps so far in the NAPA “Winners Classic” on the final point’s night of the season August 31. The Winners Classic is a lucrative event for Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature winners.

Other winners on Chandler Automotive night were, Kevan Cook Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Rick Demo Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites and Chuck Powelczyk Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Tony Steiner and Mike Bowman would lead the 25 car starting field down to the green with Steiner leading the opening lap. Steiner’s lead would be short, as Bowman was able to get around Steiner one lap later.

By lap 5, Bowman was still setting a quick pace, as Mike Mahaney, Matt Fink, Dan Vauter and Steiner ran second through fifth.

With 10 laps showing on the scoring tower, Bowman still ran out front as he could now see the back of the field, as Mahaney, Vauter, Fink and Rich Scagliotta gave chase.

From lap 10 till lap 19 Mahaney would pursue and catch Bowman finally able to work his way into the lead on lap 20. Once in the lead, Mahaney looked to pull away and try to put lapped cars between himself and the rest of the field.

The whole complexion of the race would change just six laps from the end. Mahaney, who was working the bottom and setting a quick pace suddenly had to get hard on the brakes when a slower car got out of shape just inches in front of him in turn one.. This allowed Vauter, who moved into second on lap 26, to shoot around Mahaney to be scored the new leader on lap 29.

Just after grabbing the lead, a quick yellow would fly putting Mahaney, Bowman, Scagliotta plus Larry Wight and Billy Decker who both started deep in the pack right there for a shootout to the checkers.

When the green came back out Mahaney threw everything he had at Vauter, but Vauter hit his marks and powered his way to his first ever Brewerton win. Mike Mahaney, Rich Scagliotta, Larry Wight and Billy Decker rounded out the top-five.

“This is the best win I have ever had,” said an emotional Dan Vauter in victory lane with his dad and crew. “This is my first win here (Brewerton) this is my first win up north.”

“We were settling in for a second place finish. Then I saw Mike (Mahaney) get tangled up with the lapped car. I thought you might as well go for it.”  Vauter said about his pass for the lead.

“We did not want to see that yellow,” with 5 laps to go. “I didn’t know what the car was going to do when the tires cooled down a little bit. I was right, it got tight real quick,” Vauter said with a laugh as he was able to hold on for the victory.

Vauter talked about all the troubles he has been having car wise.

“Our engine builder named this engine Diablo, because it’s been the devil for us. We just couldn’t keep it all together, but tonight she made 35 laps.”

“You want to be the best, you have to race the best. This is where the best race,” said Vauter why even with tough times he always make the tow to Brewerton and Fulton Speedways.

Point leader Kevan Cook was able to put his car in victory lane for the third time in the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified Feature. Jason Amidon, Ryan Scott, Lou Levea and Chris Fleming chased Cook across the line.

After coming close many times in the past to a trip to victory lane, Rick Demo put it all together in the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution Mod Lite Feature picking up his first win at the speedway. The win was anything but easy as he had to hold off a late challenge from Joe Isabell and Mike Mullen for the win.

Chuck Powelczyk picked up his fourth win in five starts in the 15 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks  15 lap feature. Zak Petrie, Dan Dupra, Jon Shumway and Sam Curcie finished second through fifth.
