OSWEGO, NY – Despite horrible weather conditions that have resulted in a record number of rescheduled games the Oswego teams have been in action between the torrential rain storms that have struck Central New York.
Baseball Wins
Oswego squared off against Fayetteville-Manlius and earned a 3-2 win over the homestanding Hornets.
Oswego scored two in the top of the second and the eventual winning run in the top of the fourth.
Kevin Carpentier went six inning, fanned nine, giving up four hits and only two earned runs. Ryan Lavner came on in relief in the seventh to assure the win as he didn’t give up a hit.
At the plate Rich Carpentier went 2×2 with two RBIs while Chris Pike had a squeeze bunt to drive in the other run. Lavner also went 1×3, but scored two runs as the Bucs boosted the season record to 5-4.
On Saturday evening the Bucs went to Auburn and came home with a 3-1 victory.
Matt Pirro went six inning and fanned a dozen Maroons as he picked up the win.
Kyle Perez once again came in for the relief in the seventh to pick up the save.
Rich Carpentier had a sixth inning RBI sacrifice fly and Pirro had an RBI single in the third as the Bucs scored two in the third and one in the sixth.
Tennis in Action
Two tennis victories were chalked up against Nottingham and Auburn.
Oswego shook the rust off and came away with a 4-3 win in Nottingham in boys tennis.
With weather not being cooperative it was the first time the team got to hit outside in five days.
Austin DeMott led the way with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles. Mike Hart also won at third singles 6-3, 6-1. The first doubles team of Ryan Patrick and Sean O’Connor won 6-4, 6-1 as they continue to work well together. A forfeit at third singles and a loss in the other doubles meant that for the second time this year the match would come down to fourth doubles of Kyle McCauley and Alex Kemper for Oswego. And again, the pair did not disappoint. After a shaky first set that they lost in a tiebreaker 7-6, they came back to dominate the next two sets 6-1, and 6-0. Oswego improved to 2-2 with the win.
The Oswego Buccaneers improved to 3-2 with a strong 7-0 win against Auburn.
Mike Hart gutted out a three hour, come from behind win with a score of 1-6, 7-6, 7-6. He faced two match points against himself in the second set and was down 1-4 in the third set, but still won the marathon third singles match to improve his record to 4-1. First singles player Austin DeMott came back from down 2-5 in the second set to beat Rich Granato 6-4, 7-5. Matt Randall came back from injury to win 6-1, 6-2.
At first doubles, Ryan Patrick and Sean O’Connor have been much more consistent as they had another victory by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Dylan Lavner and Tim Hanisch won 6-2, 6-3 at second doubles while Steven Scott and Stefan Mazuroski won at third doubles. Alex Kemper and Kyle McCauley won again in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) to seal the 7-0 victory.
Lady Buc Golfers Secure Second Win
The Oswego Lady Buc golf team captured its second win of 2011, defeating Utica Proctor (but losing to Rome) in a highly contested tri-match on a saturated Rome Country Club back nine.
Oswego’s 234 total was not far from their season average, and fairly respectable considering it was the first time most of the team had even laid eyes on the tricky back nine at Rome Country Club.
Two Oswego golfers Emily Anderson and Meghan LiVoti, were making their varsity debut in this match, carding 9-hole scores of 67 and 61 respectively.
LiVoti, a freshman who hits from the left side, has shown much promise in the early goings of this young season. With seven freshmen on this year’s squad, Oswego appears to be building a bright golfing future.
Also scoring in this match were fellow Bucs Michaela Kearns (64), Tess Gordon (55), and Sarah Gosek (54).
The Oswego Lady Buc golfers lost to Fayetteville Manlius on Monday evening, playing through a cold, driving wind and pelting rain at Oswego Country Club.
The rain did not, however, stop two Oswego golfers from shooting sectional qualifying scores.
Courtney Kelly’s solid round of 51 on the front nine at Oswego was good enough to get her one step closer to participating in sectionals at the end of the season. Her nine-hole score included dazzling pars on holes 2 (a 146 yard par-3) and 4 (100 yard par-3).
Courtney’s match experience has been integral to Oswego’s success this season.
“Courtney is a quiet leader out there,” said Coach Rose of his sophomore starter. “She has been one of our most consistent players this year, and she is always willing to step up and help out some of our younger athletes.”
Courtney needs one more qualifying score to be eligible for sectionals at the end of the season.
Sarah Gosek, in the meantime, has already reached one of her season-long goals. Last season, Sarah missed qualifying for sectionals by one shot. Since then, she has dedicated herself to bettering her game and improving around the greens. Her hard work during the summer appears to have paid off. With a 9-hole score of 51 on Monday, Sarah has qualified for sectional play on May 24 at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville.
The event is 18 holes and will test every bit of Sarah’s endurance and game.
Foxfire’s tree-lined fairways require accuracy off the tee, and the undulating greens require patience and a steady putting stroke.
The Bucs can’t be thinking too far ahead, though. Courtney, Sarah and the rest of the Oswego golf team still have matches to be played and possible wins to accumulate before the end of the season rolls around.
April showers might indeed bring May flowers, but for the OHS girls’ golf team those flowers can’t come soon enough.
The team trudged its way around Liverpool Country Club’s swampy front nine en route to their fourth loss of the season, being narrowly edged out by the Warriors 168-165 in a weather shortened 6 hole slugfest that left the Lady Bucs with wet socks and mud-spattered pant legs.
The match was a microcosm of the season thus far – a season wrought with poor course conditions and ever-changing weather patterns.
Coach Rose said, “A golf course is quite a bit easier when it is playing fast. When the ground is dry and hard, the player can get a lot more roll out of their shots, which creates more opportunity for pars and birdies. When the ground is dry, even if you hit a poor shot the ball might roll out 30 or 40 yards, getting you closer to the hole. When it’s wet, the ball stops where it lands. Golfers are forced to carry the ball a long distance, or suffer the consequences. Beginning golfers, by nature, are not apt to carry the ball a long way.”
Coach Rose continued. “A swampy golf course could add two to three shots per hole to a beginning golfer’s scorecard. Without the ability to carry the ball a long way, every hole plays much longer.”
Even with the difficult course conditions, Oswego did experience some success on this day as three of the starters managed a sectional qualifying score.
Michaela Kearns, Sarah Gosek and Tess Gordon all played well enough to post the first of two scores needed to be eligible for the end-of-the-season sectional tournament which will be held at Foxfire Golf Club in Baldwinsville later in May.
Lady Buc Softball Victories
The Oswego High School Lady Buccaneer softball team defeated visiting Utica Proctor behind the one-hit, 12-strikeout performance by junior pitcher Emily Kolenda.
The Lady Bucs plated three runs in the third inning. Allie Yule drew a one-out walk and scored on Devynn Wilder’s homerun to left field. Kolenda then walked, stole second, and was driven home by Ashlee Wapen.
Oswego added an insurance run as pinch runner Chrissy Abare scored on a Kolenda single.
Also hitting safely for Oswego were Vicki Race, Kaitlin Friel, and Erika Lazzaro.
Oswego captured the “Strike Out Cancer Tournament” in an event that included Oswego County schools Fulton, Mexico and Pulaski.
Oswego won the title game 15-2 over Fulton after and explosion in the semifinal in a 14-3 romp over Pulaski.
The Bucs exploded at the plate as Devyn Wilder had a day to remember with a home, 11 RBIs and was a perfect 8×8 at the plate.
In the title game Wilder finished with four hits while Erika Lazzaro and Allie Yule had three hits while Emily Kolenda, Kaitlyn Friel, Victoria Race, Taylor Maas, Mary Montagnola and Sarah Mancuso each had hits.
Varsity Lacrosse Stops Square
Oswego won its eighth game of the year with an 11-5 win over Central Square.
The Bucs held a 3-2 lead after one, but four second period goals iced it.
Dom Cianfarano had another four-goal game while Kyle Clark, Dan Maniccia and Matt Lloyd had two each and David Mathes one. Lloyd also had three assists while Jon Kaplewicz and Maniccia had two and Cianfarano one.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “It was a much better all around effort which was very necessary because Central Square has some very good lacrosse players. Besides the obvious scorers we had other highlights. Kaplewicz won 71% of his face offs and scooped up 13 ground balls. Our defensive unit cleared the ball successfully 18 of 22 times and contained their top scorers. Trent Yule saw the ball very well and played his best game of the season thus far.”
Varsity Lacrosse Falls to West Genny
Oswego boys’ varsity lacrosse lost 10-1 to traditional powerhouse West Genesee, but Coach Doc Nelson was proud of the effort.
He said, “We competed with them. We went toe-to-toe for three full quarters and most of the fourth. The kids played hard, they played well and they bought into the game plan and stuck with it.”
Jeremy Purce had the lone goal and it was an excellent shot while the team defense was the best it had been this season.
Meanwhile, goalie Trent Yule made numerous one-on-one saves and finished with 13 stops. Nelson credited the goalie with “directing the defense the entire game.”
The coach also noted, “Jon Kaplewicz, Josh Sova and John Phillips did a good job on face offs and Colin Joyce was given the toughest assignment and did well.”
Oswego lost its top offensive threat, Dom Cianfarano, in the third quarter.
Nelson noted, ”We got tired in the third when we had to play defense for about 10 minutes straight. West Genny is a very good team, and very deep.”
Ford Powers Up Buc Runners
Junior track standout Whitney Ford, turned in a double winning performance Monday for Oswego, against a very strong Rome Free Academy team, in a CNYCL make up meet, held on the Central Square Stadium track. Ford placed first in the triple jump for the Lady Bucs, with a fine leap of 32′ 3 1/2″ and finished first in the 200 meter dash, with a fast time of 27.7. She also placed second in the 100 meter dash and third in the long jump.
The Lady Black Knights won the non-league meet, by the score of 101-30.
Freshmen Tara Stacy had an outstanding afternoon, turning in personal best performances in the 800 meter run and 1500 meter run, to place third in both of these events. Other thirds for Oswego were earned by Karlie Fredette in the 400 meter dash, Becky Fidler in the high jump, and Alyssa Suits in the discus.
Sophomore McKenzie Demong turned in personal bests in the 100 and 200 meter dash for the Lady Bucs. Other bests were earned by Katrina Tafler, Becky Fidler, and Alyssa Suits in the 100 meter dash, Kaela Shafer in the 1500 meter run, Nikole Bonacorsi and Teaghan Aston in the 800 meter run, and Alixis Washington in the discus.
The Oswego girl’s track team turned in a strong performance Friday at Central Square, in the 33rd Annual Oswego County Girl’s Track and Field Invitational.
Ford led the Lady Bucs, with a fine first place finish in the 100 meter dash (13.5), against the counties elite. She also finished second in the 200 meter dash (28.0) and third in the triple jump (31′ 5 1/4″).
Oswego also placed third in the sprint medley relay (5:12.4), behind the strong efforts of Tara Stacy, Becky Fidler, Deondra Smith, and Nikole Bonacorsi. Fourth place finishes for the Lady Bucs were earned by Paige Gray, Courtney Gazda, Michelle Champagne, and Catherine Wells in the 3200 meter relay and the foursome of Champagne, Gazda, Caylin Ward and Kaela Shafer in the 1600 meter relay.
Junior Alyssa Suits earned sixth place in the discus for Oswego and earned a personal best in the 100 meter dash. Other personal best efforts included Tara Stacy in the 1500 meter run and Katrina Tafler in the triple jump.
Despite many personal best efforts, the Oswego girl’s track team lost 98-33 to the strong visiting Lady Maroon of Auburn.
Ford turned in a triple winning performance for the Lady Bucs, placing first in the 200 meter dash (27.9), the long jump (15’1″), and the triple jump, with a personal best leap of 32′ 9″. She also finished second for Oswego in the 100 meter dash. Other seconds for the Bucs were earned Tara Stacy in the 1500 meter run, Caylin Ward in the long jump, and Alyssa Suits in the discus, with a personal best toss of 68′ 6″.
Freshmen Katrina Tafler earned bests in the long jump and triple jump, to place third in both. Becky Fidler placed third in the high jump with a best. Thirds were also turned in by Tara Stacy in the 800 meter run, Michelle Champagne in the 3000 meter run, and Kaela Shafer in the discus.
Other fine personal best performances for the Lady Bucs, were turned in by Becky Fidler in the 100 and 200 meter dash, Kaela Shafer in the 800 meter run, and Caylin Ward and McKenzie Demong in the 200 meter dash.
Boys Fall on Track
The Oswego varsity boys track team lost to Rome 79-51 on Monday at Central Square.
Oswego turned in many personal-best performances on the day.
Cory Keefe had another great day for the Bucs, Coach Erwin Dewey said. Keefe scored 20 team points by winning four events. He placed first in the 100-meter dash (11.4), the 110-meter high hurdles (15.4), the 200-meter dash (23.3), and the high jump (5’ 8”).
In every dual meet this season, Keefe has won four events for the Bucs.
Colin Morgan continues to have a super season as he won the 1,600 meters (4:57) and came back to place second in the 800 meters with a personal-best time of 2:14. He then placed second in the 3,200 meters in 11:14 as he ran the event despite not feeling good.
Mike Ruggio won the discus (112’ 10”) as he beat a strong field. He also had a personal-best distance in the shot put (43’ 10”).
Dustin Searor took third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 64.9. He also placed second in the 400-meter dash (56.6) and third in the long jump (16’ 10”).
Mitch Rabalais finished third in the 800 meters, and he also had a personal-best time of 5:17 to place second in the 1,600 meters.
Morgan Rabalais ran well and placed third in the 3,200 meters.
Lacrosse Splits
Oswego boys’ varsity lacrosse fell 15-1 to Cicero North Syracuse.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “We got some good goaltending and did well in six-on-six situations. However, we had difficulty in transition, couldn’t win face offs and could not generate any offense.
Jayvee Softball Wins
The jayvee softball team snapped a five game losing streak with a 7-3 win over Skaneateles.
The Bucs got hits from Margeurite Dillon, Carrie Kelly, Isabella Winklestine, and MacKenzie King.
Whitney Daino and Caitlyn McRae scored twice. King was the winning pitcher. Allison Batchelor pitched 2 innings for the save.
Modified Loss in Softball
Elexis Rinoldo pitched a full game. She struck out one in the 22-0 loss to North Syracuse.
CNS struck out 15 Oswego batters, walked 3 and gave up 1 single.
In the fifth the Bucs started to come alive.
Emily Lagoe was hit by a pitch, Sage Dudley reached on a hit and Natasha Mezza reached on an error to load the bases. Solid pitching by CNS held the Bucs on base.
They faced a solid CNS pitcher. In the field Oswego made several great plays. All girls played their best.
Despite the score Oswego never gave up.
