Step By Step Goal Tree Takes Root

Fulton, NY – When clients in the Step By Step Wellness program want to check their progress all they have to do is look at the tree.

Program coordinator Pam Peeling has established a Goal Tree to help clients track their accomplishments when it comes to reaching their unique goals.

Provided through Catholic Charities of Oswego County, the Step By Step Wellness Program serves adults diagnosed with a mental illness with a variety of programming to help with their recovery.  Using a wellness recovery model the program supports clients with their recovery, promotes wellness, and combats the stigma of mental illness.

Various program offerings help individuals increase their self-esteem, establish group affiliations, and maintain independence in the community.  Part of that process is the establishment and achievement of individual goals.

“Step By Step clients meet with a recovery coach to determine what aspects of their life need to be addressed to help them better cope with, and recover from, their mental health diagnosis.  Clients then set their goals and begin working towards achieving them,” explained Peeling.

As clients reach their goals they are encouraged to create a leaf for the tree that indicates their goal and expresses their feelings about reaching that goal.

“The goal tree gives the client a real sense of accomplishment and inspires them to continue their efforts to reach other goals they may have. They are proud to have their achievement recognized by their peers and reminded of their success every time they look at the Goal Tree,” added Peeling.

The Step By Step Wellness Outreach Program offers a range of components to assist clients with their recovery from a mental illness including; prevocational services, supported educational services, peer supports & advocacy, and assistance in individual goal planning and achievement.

The program is offered at Catholic Charities of Oswego County, 365 W. First St. in Futon Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Additionally, to serve the northern part of Oswego County, the Step By Step Wellness Program is available in Pulaski at Christ Our Light Church, 23 Niagara St., each Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We are happy to be able to offer the Step By Step Wellness Program in both Fulton and Pulaski.  We welcome adults diagnosed with a mental illness to join us each at the location of their choice to take part in the many activities and services that the program offers. The benefits that the Step By Step Wellness Program offers its clients is immeasurable as they learn to cope with their diagnosis and work towards recovery,” added Peeling.
