The weather may be keeping some people indoors. But, at St. Francis Commons the weather hasn’t stopped residents there from getting plenty of exercise.
Thanks to a partnership with SUNY Oswego, Amanda Shultz, a senior majoring in Wellness Management is completing an internship at the assisted living residence which focuses on keeping seniors active and healthy.
The internship involves leading two 45-minute “SUNY Fit” classes each week for residents, incorporating movement and stretching to music.
Every Friday afternoon the program is expanded to involve an indoor walking club, volleyball games and even a few new twists on games; recent activities reflect the Winter Olympics.
“My passion is to help people improve the quality of their lives,” said Shultz. “Being able to help the residents be more physically active helps them immensely in performing everyday tasks that can sometimes become more difficult as we age.”
Shultz added, “My goal is simply for the residents to get stronger and feel better while hopefully having a lot of fun. So far, I have seen great participation and I am developing a great relationship with each person attending my class.”
Shultz’s internship at St. Francis Commons will continue through the current school semester.
“Everyone understands how important physical activity is for your well-being, and everyone likes to make exercise as enjoyable as possible,” said Peg Livoti, director of activities at St. Francis Commons. “We are excited to have Amanda’s enthusiasm for exercise and healthy lifestyle choices, and are pleased to add this wellness program to compliment all the other activities and events we have available for our residents.”
St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence is the newest phase of development on the St. Luke healthcare campus, located on the east side in the city of Oswego. The campus also includes St. Luke Health Services, Bishop’s Commons Enriched Living Residence and Little Lukes Childcare Center.
