In a five minute address on Tuesday, Governor David Paterson promised to do what state leaders have been avoiding for decades: Shrink the size of state government and help New York taxpayers who he says are struggling to do more with less money.
The 2008-09 spending plan was approved 4-2 (with one absent) Tuesday evening. It takes into account revenue for leasing sections of the Education Center and it contains the 10 positions that were restored in the second budget proposal.
Board members ask administrators to show them what the budget would be like with a 4.7 as well as a 3.5 tax rate increase. They will meet again to next week to decide which, if either, best suits the needs of the entire district. The district must have a budget in place by the end of the month.
UPDATED: A special school board meeting is set Thursday to discuss the budget. Unofficially, voters defeated the 2008-09 spending plan by a 1,666 no to 1,133 yes tally. The school board can now either adopt the budget as currently is or meet and decide to reduce the budget.
Voters in the Hannibal Central School District have an opportunity to hear details about the proposed 2008-09 budget this evening. The district will put the $25,122,068 plan to a vote next week.
