Up to Speed: A&P Auto Parts Springs Oswego Into Month of June Saturday Night

OSWEGO, NY – After a week off following the completion of Oswego Speedway’s 68th annual season opener on May 26, the ‘Steel Palace’ will return to action June 9 when A&P Auto Parts presents ‘Spring Championship’ events for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS.

The 2018 season has already started out with a bang in both divisions after full points in each of the Jim Shampine Memorial Twin 50s two weeks ago have allowed Keith Shampine to jump out to the early lead in the Novelis Supermodified standings

Sitting nine points behind Shampine tied for second are seven time speedway champion Otto Sitterly and 2016 track champion Michael Barnes while Chris Perley, who picked up his first-ever non-wing checkered flag at the Big O to begin the season, sits in fourth.

Further back in the standings, Dave Danzer is in good shape to start the season after top five finishes in each of the twins on May 26 while defending speedway champion and race winner two weeks ago Dave Shullick Jr. is in sixth as an early crash in the second season opening twin provided a bit of a setback for the No. 2 team approaching the month of June.

Currently completing the top ten in the standings are Brandon Bellinger, Dave Gruel, Aric Iosue, and ISMA regular Dan Bowes, who drove to two top ten finishes May 26 in his non-wing debut.

In addition to what is already shaping up to be a very exciting championship battle, just nine points separate impressive rookies Tyler Thompson and Nathan Schultzkie heading into the second race of the season.

Throw in Joe Gosek, Dan Connors Jr, and Jeff Abold, who will all be in search of success for the opening night jitters and the competition is sure to be stout this Saturday with Abold barring race night sponsor A&P Auto Parts on the side of his No. 05.

After a solid showing of 20 Supermodifieds on opening night, Bowes, McKnight and Perley will all take June 9 off, but instead, we will have five new competitors in the pits for this coming weekend.

Former rookie of the year Logan Rayvals will make his first appearance of the season with the No. 94, two time feature winner Shaun Gosselin will bring the No. 77 out for the first time of the season, Tim Devendorf plans to return with his No. 5 after an impressive run in last year’s Budweiser International Classic, Roger Clark will have the No. 4 ready to go for his first race since 2000, and longtime Snyder Racing crewman Brent Murray will pilot the No. 0 as a rookie this Saturday night.

On the Pathfinder Bank SBS side of the pits, Dave Cliff is off to a hot start in 2018 following back to back championships in the prior two seasons. Cliff won the Tony White Memorial 35 on Opening Night and is the current points leader with the Barbeau Racing No. 50.

Russ Brown, the only five-time track champion in the history of the division, sits second following a runner-up effort on opening night while Anthony Losurdo also started his season on a high note with a masterful charge to third from outside the top 20.

Jesse Bearup, Jack Patrick, Camden Proud, David LaTulip, Cameron Rowe, Cameron Black, and Barry Kingsley currently complete the top ten in the standings after all seven finished in the top ten on May 26.

All-time series wins leader Mike Bond will be back this weekend in search of redemption behind the wheel of the Four Sevens Motorsports No. 74 following a crash on opening night, as will championship hopeful Dan Kapuscinski in the Missile Motorsports No. 00M. Kapuscinski was caught in the same incident.

Tyler Shullick invaded the Big O May 26 with Denise Bond’s No. 67 machine and nearly wound up with a top five finish before running into mechanical issues with just a handful of laps to go. It’s possible that the full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series crew member could return to action Saturday night.

Also hoping to turn their disappointing starts to the 2018 season around are Mike Bruce, Dalton Doyle, Josh Kerr, Greg O’Connor, and Dennis Richmond, who were all either caught up in accidents or struggled on May 26.

Following a very impressive 12th place effort to begin his Oswego career, rookie Joshua Sokolic leads Steve Flack, Tim Glidden Jr. and Tyler Henry in the healthy battle for Pathfinder SBS Rookie of the Year. All four rookies are expected to return this weekend.

Action at Oswego is set to get under way at the regular start time of 6:45 p.m. Saturday with time trials for the Pathfinder Bank SBS and Novelis Supers taking place at 6:15 p.m. Hot laps will start off at 4 p.m. General admission seating is available for just $15 with kids 16 and younger free.
