Oswego, NY – The Oswego YMCA will be offering free Weight Loss Surgery support group meetings starting May 11 at 6:15 p.m. at the YMCA, 265 W. First St.
Meetings will take place the second Wednesday of each month.
As part of the Y’s commitment to improving the health and well being of the community, the support group is being offered for individuals to connect with one another and share their experiences with weight loss surgery.
The monthly meetings are specifically designed for postoperative patients as a safe place to share feelings, find motivation and support and start building a new life.
“Studies show that support groups like ours can increase the chances of short-term and long-term success for patients after bariatric surgery. We welcome significant others to attend with our patients, as part of their support system” said Trish Levine, Oswego YMCA Health and Wellness Director.
Each support group meeting will be facilitated by a YMCA member who has had bariatric surgery and will include a variety of topics for discussion.
Monthly presentations may include an “Ask the Doctor” segment as well as guest speakers on various health and wellness topics including nutrition and stress management.
Tiffany Gentile, MS LMHC CEDS, of Counseling and Healing Arts of Oswego County, will be lending support throughout the process.
Gentile is a licensed mental health counselor and certified eating disorder specialist with experience supporting weight loss surgery patients.
Participants will have time for questions and provided the opportunity for social interaction with fellow weight loss surgery patients.
Members of the YMCA weight loss surgery support group will have the opportunity to build a community of friends among people who really understand what they’re going through and will be offered a YMCA membership discount.
With more than 1,600 members, one in nine people living in the Oswego community is a member of Oswego YMCA.
