Fulton’s Cooper Nets Assist As Oswego State Men Fall In OT Playoff Game

Oct 31, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Geneseo’s Ian Mort scored the game-winning goal less than one minute into overtime to hand the Oswego State men’s soccer team a 3-2 loss in the first round of the SUNY Athletic Conference Playoffs. Sophomore Max Guliani (New York, N.Y.) forced the contest into extra frames with a goal in the 77th minute, but the Blue Knights scored on the first shot in sudden death to advance to the conference semifinals. The Lakers ended the season at 6-10-1, while Geneseo improved to 9-6-2.

Scoring started after the midway point of the first half when the Blue Knights’ Yuta Shimizu served a corner kick to Kurt Jameson, who put the ball into the lower left part of the net from 12 yards out. Oswego State tied the game when Felipe Cavalcanti (Sr., Valatie, N.Y.) scored on a shot from six yards out after receiving a pass from Marshall Cooper (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) at 34:36.

In the waning minutes of the first half, Geneseo regained the lead when Ian Mort got the ball past Laker goalkeeper Matt Wopperer (Jr., Manilus, N.Y.), as the Blue Knights went into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

Guliani tied the game at 2-2 with 76:55 elapsed in the contest when he put in a header after his initial shot hit the post. Neither team scored the rest of the way, forcing the game into overtime.

With 52 seconds gone in the extra frame, Mort netted his second goal of the game from six yards out on the right side of the net after Jason Tartick touched the ball from the left side past Wopperer.

Geneseo narrowly edged Oswego State in shots attempt, 16-15, but owned a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Wopperer stopped four of the seven shots he faced, while Madarasz posted one save on three shots.
