Bruce and Pat Ingersoll

Friends will gather Saturday in Fulton to try to help a local man’s fight against cancer.

Bruce Ingersoll has a form of colorectal cancer that isn’t responding to traditional treatments.  He’s getting an experimental treatment at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo.

Saturday, from noon to 6:00 p.m., family and friends will hold a fundraiser to help Bruce and his family pay the costs of those trips to Buffalo.  The fundraiser is at the Polish Home on Rt. 48.  Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-10 and free for children ages 5 and under.

The event features a barbecue pork dinner, raffles, auctions and music.  Among the items to be auctioned is a $600 muzzle loading gun, donated by B&T Sports of Fulton.

“His spirits are good,” Bruce’s wife Pat says of her husband.  “In fact, most of the time, his spirits are better than mine.  He can’t do what he used to do, but he tries.”

The experimental treatment requires many trips to Buffalo. Pat Ingersoll said that while the treatments don’t cost the family anything because they’re experimental, other drugs that are part of his regimen do affect the family’s prescription drug co-pay.  The frequent trips to Buffalo cost money and have put a lot of wear and tear on their vehicle, she said.

Bruce has used up all 220 of his sick days from work and the family, on one regular income, is trying to keep paying his $860 per month health insurance bill.

So family members decided to pull together a fundraiser, with items donated from many local businesses and people, to give the Ingersolls a hand.

“If you ask for something, they’re there,” Pat Ingeroll said of the people behind the effort.  “You really never know who your friends are until something like this.”

The Fulton District Wide Storytelling Festival was held and storytellers from throughout the district showcased their talents in telling a wide variety of stories.
