BROOKINGS, South Dakota – Hubert “Hugh†Ackman, 78, died Tuesday, September 30, 2008, at his residence in Brookings, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, October 3, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings.
Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings.
Visitation (was) from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
Hubert Herman Ackman was born September 15, 1930, to Herman Henry and M. Geneva (Waldo) Ackman on a small farm west of Edgewood, Iowa.
Hugh was the youngest child of five boys and a sister who died during or shortly after childbirth.
He attended school in Edgewood and graduated from Edgewood High School.
Following his service in the United States Army, he earned a B.A. from the University of Dubuque and an M.A. from the University of Iowa.
He was a classroom teacher in the Dubuque, Iowa, school system and later served as principal of two elementary schools there.
In 1962 Geneva Gillespie and Hugh were married at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, Iowa.
After he and his family moved to Brookings in 1969, he was principal at Central Elementary School and finished his career in education as principal of Medary Elementary School.
He enjoyed working with his many colleagues and, of course, all those children.
Hugh was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque and First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, serving both churches in numerous capacities.
He was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Golden K Kiwanis, and the Masons, as well as numerous other organizations.
He also helped to organize Seniors and Law Enforcement Together in the Brookings community.
Following his retirement, he worked with the Volunteer Service Bank.
Hugh was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with friends.
He was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Ackman of Brookings; three children: J. D. (Nicole) Ackman of Brookings, Cindy (Doug) Putnam of Rico, Colorado, Tammy (Tim) Thompson of Oswego, New York; four grandchildren; two brothers: Keith Ackman of Redondo Beach, California, and Donald Ackman of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded by his parents, his sister, and two brothers: Harry Carl and Bruce.
Memorials will be forwarded by the family to the Brookings Volunteer Service Bank.
