Grant aids SUNY Oswego program to recruit teachers for urban schools
A three-year, $43,910 grant through the state Education Department’s Teacher Opportunity Corps will boost a SUNY Oswego School of Education program to increase the number of students of color training for careers in urban schools.
Stacie Roberts, program coordinator of the CYO Program, recently presented Carrie Victory of AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps member Amanda MacFarland with a certificate in recognition of AmeriCorps’ support for the CYO Mentoring Program.
More than 1,700 SUNY Oswego students contributed $4,817.74 to the Oswego County Humane Society thanks to a Dec. 8 Miss-a-Meal event through the college’s Dining Services.
The Coast Guard has been conducting joint training exercises with the Oswego Fire Department to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Earlier this month, a college student was swept off the Breakwall and into the icy Lake Ontario water. He suffered only minor injuries and was rescued quickly. Many people aren’t as fortunate, according to Senior Chief Joe Orlando of Coast Guard Station Oswego.
