Great Bear Is Latest Addition to Volkssporting Itinerary

Participants may purchase a pin designating the Great Bear Recreation Area Volkssport Walk by completing the information on the start card for the walk at Great Bear.Volkssporting in German is “the sport of the people.” The Great Bear Walk joins a series of walks created by the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Volkssport Association along or near the 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway which parallels Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River in New York and Pennsylvania.

Oswego’s Independence Parade Committee Announces Featured Performers

The annual Oswego Independence Parade will feature the sparkle and pageantry of The Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association. Pictured is The Uptown String Band’s Captain Ryan Radcliffe, who will lead the group through Oswego on July 7 beginning at 1 p.m. from Oswego High School and ending at the East Seventh Street tunnel at Fort Ontario.The Oswego Independence Parade will feature The Uptown String Band, a member of the Philadelphia Mummers String Band Association. The Independence Celebration, which will be held on July 7 beginning with the Annual Independence Parade at 1 p.m. The theme for this very special event is “Fifty Years of Family, Fun and Fireworks!”

The 1800s Tin Shop was the headquarters for the Underground Railroad. It was here that Starr Clark, a local tinsmith, and other Mexico abolitionists made plans to help runaway slaves get to freedom in Canada.
