School Districts to Distribute School Supplies

Members of the Oswego County Stuff A Bus Committee meet to prepare for the upcoming school supply distributions.  Members present at time of photo from left are: Melanie Trexler, executive director of United Way and co-chair of the Stuff A Bus Program; Helen Hoefer, community services director at Catholic Charities of Oswego County; Jo Ann Conzone of the Oswego City School District and co-chair of the Stuff A Bus Program; Roger Sprague of the Oswego City School District, president of the Oswego City School District teachers' association and site coordinator for Oswego; Holly Bristol from Oswego County Opportunities; Laura Lloyd, Oswego County Opportunities OPTIONS case specialist; and Pat Crowe from APW.The Stuff-A-Bus campaign, which began this past spring and will culminate on August 14, was initiated to collect school supplies so that children in need throughout Oswego County would have the supplies they need to begin the new school year.  The United Way is soliciting area businesses and individuals and have arranged for eight busses to be located throughout Oswego County where people will be able to donate school supplies.

Authorities ID Victims of Falls Incident

Investigation revealed that 19-year-old Michael Peters of Parish had climbed over the railing at the observation deck to get a better view of the falls when he slipped and fell. Kelton Lewis, 17, of Pulaski, reportedly attempted to assist Peters. However, he also slipped and fell over the falls. He survived; Peters reportedly died from his injuries.

Mexico Point Park’s Severin Bischof Art Show Set Friday

Friends of Mexico Point Park will host an art show featuring Severin Bischof’s watercolors and wood cuts. Friday, August 9, at 7 p.m., will be opening night with a wine and dessert gala. Admission is $20. The show will continue on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11, 1-4 p.m. for a $5 admission price.

Civil War Historian will speak at Fort Ontario Aug. 14

Fort Ontario State Historic Site will host a lecture by Civil War historian Thomas Ebert at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks. Ebert will discuss common myths of slavery and emancipation from the perspective of both the North and South. (Photo by Mary Ellen Barbeau, Oswego County Tourism Office.)Before the American Civil War (1861-1865) Oswego County, NY, played an active role in the Underground Railroad, a movement which concealed and forwarded escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. Oswego County provided more men to Union Army regiments, on a percentage basis, than any other county in New York State.
