The New York State Department of Health has notified the Oswego County Health Department that more evidence of the West Nile virus (WNV) was found in two different mosquito pools collected on August 21. One of the pools is located in the town of Constantia and it is the first positive finding in that township. The second pool is in the town of New Haven where the WNV has been found earlier this summer.

The events, which were funded through a special state grant from Senator Ritchie, allowed Oswego County residents to drop off a maximum of four tires at five locations throughout the county, with the usual $5 fee for tire-drop off being waived. “With one tire acting as a breeding ground for an estimated one million mosquitoes, the more than 2,000 tires we were able to dispose of represent a big step in this year’s fight against insects and the diseases they carry,” said Senator Ritchie.
At the G. Ray Bodley High School Commencement Ceremony held in June, theatre awards were presented to two honor graduates, Amanda Trombly and Katelyn Caza. Presented in memory of Mr. William Quirk, a long-time English teacher and theatre director at both Fulton High School and G. Ray Bodley High School, the Quirk Award is presented to the graduating senior who has made the greatest contribution to the theatre program at GRB during his/her high school years.
Master puppeteer Joseph Cashore brings his lifelike creations to SUNY Oswego’s Waterman Theatre on Sept. 7, for performances at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., launching the college’s 2013-14 Artswego Performing Arts Series. In addition, informative programs by the artist are scheduled in three area communities as part of an extended residency. While the Cashore Marionettes are complex in construction, the veteran puppeteer aims for effects that are stunning in their simplicity.
All Oswego County government offices, including the solid waste transfer stations and recycling drop-off centers, will be closed Monday, Sept. 2, for Labor Day.
A full day of children’s activities, fishing seminars and outdoor programs are planned for this year’s open house on National Hunting and Fishing Day, Sept. 28, at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s Salmon River Fish Hatchery. This is the 18th annual open house at the hatchery. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Two parcels had their assessments lowered. They will receive refunds based on their reduced assessments. The resolutions took effect immediately.
