After nearly an hour of debate Thursday night, the Oswego County Legislature OK’d a resolution in support of Assembly Bill A6146-2013. The proposed bill would require recipients of certain public assistance programs to submit to drug testing. Proponents say that drug testing and screening will help deter illegal drug use and ensure that public benefit monies are used for their intended purposes. The resolution also notes that the state should not turn around and mandate the county pays for the program.

Muriel Allerton – Memorial Services

Memorial services for Muriel Allerton, 93, former mayor of Fulton who passed away on Thursday July 25, 2013, will be held 11 a.m. on September 28 at State Street United Methodist Church, corner of South Fourth and State streets in Fulton.

Friendly Family Feud at FLS

Frederick Leighton Elementary School students kicked off the year with a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) assembly. After Principal Julie Burger reviewed the school rules a friendly game of Family Feud focusing on proper lunch room etiquette was on the agenda.

Oswego County Postpones Aerial Spraying Tonight

The Oswego County Health Department has postponed its plans to spray the Toad Harbor / Big Bay Swamp area today due to rain, wind and falling temperatures. “We may not be able to spray for the next few days,” said Oswego County Public Health Director Jiancheng Huang. “This is partly because of the potential for rain, but, more importantly, because of the significantly cooler temperatures.” Aerial spraying will resume when weather permits.

SUNY Oswego to launch graduate certificate in health, wellness

Starting this spring, SUNY Oswego will offer a new graduate certificate program in health and wellness, aimed at health care workers who are seeking to motivate healthy behaviors in their patients — and in themselves.

CNY Arts Center and Gallery Events Slated

The “Arts in the heART” Gallery, CNY Arts Center’s premier location for enjoying some of Central New York’s innovative art, is launching its newest event: TH3. Every third Thursday of the month, the Gallery will be hosting a Happy Hour, where community members can meet their artists in a social atmosphere.

Oswego Students Enjoy Unique Chinese Instruments and Music

A tremendous Arts-in-Education event was celebrated by students at the Kingsford Park and Fitzhugh Park elementary schools. “Melody of China” was scheduled to perform in both Oswego schools this week as the students were exposed to classical, folk and contemporary Chinese music. Students heard and saw the various unique instruments and enjoyed a genuine learning experience.

Marine Museum Announces Fall Hours

The museum complex consists of a main building of exhibits highlighting more than 400 years of maritime history, the National Historic Landmark World War II Tug the “LT-5,” New York State Derrick Boat 8 from the Canal System, locally built schooner Ontario, and Eleanor D the last US commercial fishing vessel to work Lake Ontario.
