CENG’s Support for Call-N-Ride Fosters Independence

The Call-N-Ride Bus gives me independence” was the common message shared with Jill Lyon and Natalyn Giverson, representatives from CENG, at the monthly Oswego County Visually Impaired luncheon held at Springside on August 19. The two representatives of CENG, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, were invited to the luncheon in appreciation of Call-N-Ride. Call-N-Ride is a low-cost, curb-to-curb bus service that is available in Oswego County for the elderly as well as people with disabilities.

Arts, Crafts, and Kites at Historic Fort Ontario Sept. 7

Kites will fill the skies over Fort Ontario in the city of Oswego during the Arts, Crafts, and Kite Festival Sept. 7.  The Fort Ontario event is one of the largest gatherings of kite fliers in State of New York. (Photo by Mary Ellen Barbeau, Oswego County Tourism.)The Friends of Fort Ontario will host an Arts, Crafts, and Kites Festival Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the spacious and historic grounds outside the old fort. Admission to the festival is free while normal admission fees will apply to those who wish to tour the old fort. Kite experts from around the United States and Canada and noted kite historian Thom Shanken will be on hand to assist kite fliers of all ages and abilities.

Firefighters hold Memorial Service for Departed Members Sept. 28

Officers and firefighters of the Oswego County Fire Services will hold a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Scriba Fire Station, State Route 104 East.
The memorial will honor the deceased Oswego County firefighters who passed away during the past year from Sept. 15, 2012 to Sept. 15, 2013.

As college classes resume, Shineman Science and Engineering Center welcomes first students

Richard S. Shineman Science and Engineering CenterThe new state-of-the-art building is located in the center of campus, right next to Campus Center and the building it’s replacing, Snygg Hall. Shineman Hall is named after the late Dr. Richard S. Shineman who was a professor of chemistry at SUNY Oswego from 1962 to 1988. He was the founding chair of the chemistry department.

All Systems Go, Bond Rockets to Second International Classic Win

Mexico’s Bob Bond won his second International Classic 200 at the Oswego Speedway Sunday afternoon, taking the lead away from pole-sitter, Pat Lavery, on the 155th lap and racing away from the field unchallenged. Defending race champ, Otto Sitterly, would move into second place and become Bond’s nearest chaser. However, he was unable to show Bond a wheel nor keep pace with the race winner’s one-month old supermodified. Together, the two drivers have combined to win the last five International Classics.
