Braving the cold and windy conditions recently, more than 50 people came to Great Bear Springs for a tree pruning presentation. With the orchard trees having been unattended for over 30 years, they were ideal for demonstrating. Fernando Araya a local arborist was the presenter and instructor.

Battle Island Golf Course, in Fulton, was the site October 30 of the annual Traffic Safety Champion Awards sponsored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The 13 winners come from all areas of law enforcement and the community at large who go above and beyond in their pursuit of safety education.
Representatives from the Oswego Lions Club recently presented Lois Luber, resource development director with the United Way of Greater Oswego County and chair of the planning committee for the United Way’s annual Stone Soup Luncheon Aaron Thorpe with a check for $500 in support of this year’s luncheon.
Students from Oswego High School’s Interact Club recently made blankets and then donated them to Oswego Hospital’s Maternity Center. The Interact Club is associated with the two Oswego Rotary clubs. As part of this community service project, the students made 40 fleece blankets that will be given to newborns at Oswego Hospital.
Composer and sound artist Bora Yoon will bring an evening of musical exploration to SUNY Oswego’s Sheldon Hall ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15. Collaborating with traditional Korean drummer Vong Pak and multi-reeds player and Oswego music faculty member Trevor Jorgensen, Yoon said her aim for the program is “to create a new sonic landscape from palettes of traditional Korean and contemporary American sound.”
The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team won a thriller 3-2 over Castleton State College in overtime as Megan Hagg scored the game-winner 2:31 into the extra period. Lizzy Marks assisted on the deciding goal, helping the Lakers to a 2-0 mark on the season with two wins in the Oswego State Classic.
SUNY Oswego and Menorah Park will co-host “Aging in Focus — a Geriatric Mental Health Forum” from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 12, at the Crowne Plaza in Syracuse, focusing on the roles mental health and mental illness play in the lives of the elderly.
