Cayuga Community College will offer Cayuga 101 Foundations for College Success through partnerships with area school districts that participate in the college concurrent enrollment program, Cayuga Advantage. This fall, four school districts — Cato-Meridian, Sandy Creek, Sodus and Southern Cayuga — will offer the course to their high school students.
On Aug. 3, in cooperation with Oswego County Soil & Water Conservation District, Oswego County Environmental Management Council and SLELO PRISM, a group of volunteers from the Oswego Canoe/Kayak Club participated in the hand pulling of the invasive water chestnut at the historic canal and guard lock section near Battle Island on the Oswego River.
Port City Roller Derby, sporting a four-game winning streak, will look to keep the momentum rolling at its next home bout, Aug. 17, against the Black Diamond Dames’ Dolls of Destruction in Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. whistle for the fourth home bout in the league’s third season.
The H. Lee White Museum and Maritime Center celebrated Oswego’s first-ever “Lighthouse Weekend” in recognition of the West Pierhead Lighthouse. The event also commemorated the birthday of the US Coast Guard on Aug. 4 as well as the celebration of Lighthouse Day on Aug. 7 and the creation of a United States Postal stamp, which features an image of the Oswego Lighthouse.
State Senator Patty Ritchie visited Sandy Pond recently, where dredging is taking place on a channel that, throughout the years, has been made nearly impassable for many boats, and made navigation hazardous for those that could traverse the channel.
For Fulton Campus students, the orientation program will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. August 22 and from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on August 29 at the Fulton Campus, 11 River Glen Drive, Fulton.
A special meeting of the Oswego City School District Board of Education is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6 at 2 p.m. in the Education Center Board Room. The meeting will be called to order at 2 p.m. and move immediately to executive session.
Despite a shaky forecast and a few passing showers, Oswego Kartway signed in 100 entries for its annual ‘Battle at the Bullring’ events last Friday night presented by RJ Kart Sales. By night’s end, two separate drivers signed in for the evening’s full racing slate would walk away with a pair of feature winner’s plaques from Platinum Promotional Products in Phoenix, NY.
First time winners have become synonymous with the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS event at Oswego Speedway, and the form held true on Saturday night as rookie driver Danny Abt cruised to the title victory worth $1,500 presented by POMCO Group. Abt snuck underneath Dennis Rupert to complete the event’s first circuit and would go on to out hustle a hard charging Mike Bruce on a late race restart to claim the victory, becoming the first rookie driver to win the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS since Dan Ferlito in 1999.
