Second graders at Granby Elementary School practiced their reading, writing, and researching skills recently through an interactive videoconferencing project based on the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. Granby was paired with Liverpool Elementary School for the 40-minute session. Before seeing each other face to face via a webcam, each school came prepared with animal clues from the story.
Dr. Robert “Mac” West, of Informal Learning Experiences in Denver, conducted a feasibility study regarding the plan to create a children’s museum in the Port City. “It’s a fantastic project,” he said. As the group moves forward, two of its biggest challenges are going to be the cost and finding a location, he pointed out. Organizers of the year-old project are heartened by the strong community support they have received so far.
Some city workers didn’t want to give up 4 percent of their salaries and take a two-week furlough, the mayor said. Some even felt the city should layoff workers to cut expenses, he added. The city is now looking at alternative sources of revenue.
Today (Jan. 29), US Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced that the New York State Canal Flood Warning System has received a Federal Emergency Management Agency funding obligation totaling $1.2 million for the installation of rain and stream gauges along the Mohawk River, Oswego River and Upper Hudson River Basin.
