On Aug 2, more than two dozen volunteers participated in the pulling and removal of the invasive water chestnut from areas around the historical Battle Island area of the Oswego River. Volunteers were a diverse group including NY Sea Grant Launch Stewards and people from Jefferson and Onondaga counties – and visitor from Colorado.

Schumer, Gillibrand Announce More Than $1 Million For Critical Water Infrastructure For Town Of Sandy Creek

U.S. senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday, Aug. 8, announced a $750,000 grant and a $308,000 loan for the town of Sandy Creek from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This federal funding will be used to update and expand the town’s critical water district #2 in order to replace water mains. This update will ensure the new water mains are compliant with regulations and meet supply and distribution standards.

The New York State Department of Budget reported in its quarterly update that the state estimates it will receive $4.2 billion in 2015 from financial settlements reached by the Department of Financial Services, Department of Law, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. This is unexpected revenue for the state and has provided us with a surplus. There are a number of ideas circulating on how or if we should spend this money.
