Due to the growing homeless population in Oswego County, the Oswego County Department of Social Services has partnered with the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, Oswego County Opportunities, and Catholic Charities to utilize AmeriCorps members under the Economic Opportunity Program to help provide homeless services for many at-risk individuals. The program began earlier this fall.
The Oswego County Department of Social Services will sponsor an informational meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Department of Social Services, 100 Spring St., for people who are interested in becoming foster or adoptive parents. Oswego County also needs Hispanic foster parents.
The Oswego County Legislature’s Economic Development and Planning Committee presented a proclamation designating October as 4-H Month in Oswego County. With the support of the Oswego County Legislature, Cornell Cooperative Extension serves rural and urban youth through 4-H Youth Development programs.
The request comes after the Governor last week proposed an expansion of Taste NY, setting goals to add Taste NY retail stores in strategic locations and triple gross sales of participating vendors in the coming year. In her letter to Governor Cuomo, Senator Ritchie suggests reopening the rest area between exits 32 and 31, which has sat vacant since 2010 and adding a Taste NY retail location in an effort to welcome visitors and highlight local products.
The program enrolls three- and four-year-old children and is provided at no cost to families. Head Start’s goal is promoting school readiness through a variety of learning materials and developmentally appropriate opportunities that assist children in developing academically, socially, and emotionally.

The auction to benefit the Oswego Lighthouse restoration project, originally scheduled for October 25, has been rescheduled to April 25, 2015. Donations are still being accepted and are strongly encouraged from the community. “In order to maximize the auction as a fund raiser for the Lighthouse, we decided to reschedule the event to April 25, 2015,” said Mercedes Niess, executive director of the H. Lee White Marine Museum.
Raymond H. Schneider, 85, of Oswego, died on Tuesday October 14, 2014, at his home in care of Oswego County Hospice Services with his family.
The Oswego County Historical Society proudly presents the 75th anniversary of “Gone With the Wind.” The classic film will be featured on November 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the historic landmark Oswego Theatre at 138 W. Second St. All proceeds from the event will support the Richardson-Bates House Museum in Oswego.
