The Next Step Toward A Better Boating Season

I know firsthand that the relationship between New York State and our neighbors to the north is incredibly special. As the state senator who represents the longest stretch of our state’s 450-mile shared Canadian border, I have been active cultivating stronger ties with the government and people of Canada. Part of that effort has been working with my Canadian counterparts to advocate for legislation that would boost tourism in the Thousand Islands and Lake Ontario region by easing strict reporting requirements for boaters.

Oswego County monitoring high levels on Lake Ontario

High water levels on Lake Ontario have prompted flooding concerns across the lake, including the shoreline in Oswego County, Oswego County Director of Emergency Management Dale Currier reported. “Water levels on the lake are very high this spring, and counties along the entire southern shore of the lake west of Oswego have been experiencing issues along their shorelines,” Currier said.

Council Updated On Lighthouse Restoration

Day by day, the iconic Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse is coming back to life. At Monday’s Common Council meeting, Mercedes Niess updated councilors on the progress made last year by the lighthouse restoration committee and a cadre of volunteers. After nearly 2,200 volunteer hours, the Port City landmark is well on the way to restoration. The first-ever public tours of the lighthouse were offered in 2016.
