Two hundred years ago, the first ceremonial shovelful of dirt was dug on the Erie Canal near Rome, NY. In July 1817, New York officially undertook construction of what would become the longest artificial waterway and greatest public works project in North America. This year marks the bicentennial of the Erie Canal, a milestone that provides a good reason to look back at our history and appreciate the engineering marvel that is the Erie Canal.

This picture doesn’t begin to do them justice, but Jack and Mack are so bonded with people (all people) and with each other that it is almost impossible to get them to “pose” the way a more aloof and dignified cat will. They are brothers, orphaned at a very young age and bottle fed by one of our saintly foster families so they could survive.
The Oswego County Health Department will hold its next rabies clinic July 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Granby Town Highway Garage. All dogs, ferrets, and cats, including pets that remain indoors, must be vaccinated against rabies. The first rabies vaccine should be given at three months of age. Ferrets must be vaccinated annually.
The Oswego County Office for the Aging will distribute farmers market coupon booklets beginning July 12. The coupons may be used to buy locally-grown fresh fruits and vegetables from participating farmers and at participating farmers’ markets. There are a limited number of coupon booklets available.
The Fulton Rotary Club Foundation recently honored retired Superintendent of Schools Michael J. Egan with a Paul Harris Fellowship, making a $1,000 donation to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of his many contributions to the Fulton and Oswego County community.
Assemblyman Will Barclay is pleased to once again sponsor the Assembly Summer Reading Challenge. Students who read at least 15 minutes per day for 40 days this summer will receive a certificate from Assemblyman Barclay and be invited to a Summer Reading Challenge party.
All Oswego County government offices will be closed Tuesday, July 4.
