Cleanup Scheduled for Lake Ontario’s Shoreline

David Cuevas, a local AmeriCorps member serving Oswego County’s Youth Bureau, is planning a shoreline cleanup as part of the Alliance for the Great Lakes’ Adopt-a-Beach Program. About 13,000 volunteers participate each year in cleanups and assess environmental conditions on beaches and shorelines on all five Great Lakes, clearing tens of thousands of pounds of litter from their shorelines.

Camp Rainbow of Hope Offers Comfort to Grieving Children

Children who have experienced the loss of a loved one are encouraged to apply to Camp Rainbow of Hope, a three-day residential camp that takes place every August at Camp Hollis. The program is sponsored by Friends of Oswego County Hospice, Inc., the Oswego County Health Department’s Hospice Program, and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau’s division of parks and recreation.

Symphoria To Perform Free Concert At Fort Ontario

On July 16 at 7:30 p.m., Symphoria, Central New York’s musician-led cooperative orchestra, will perform a free outdoor concert at Fort Ontario State Historic Site in Oswego as part of the city of Oswego Summer Concert Series. The stage will be set up on the bluff overlooking Oswego Harbor, just outside the old stone fort, with a Lake Ontario sunset for a backdrop.

Mayor, Councilor Spar Over Herbicide Debate

Mayor Billy Barlow fired back at Council Vice President John Gosek on Monday refuting claims the councilor made at last week’s committee meetings. Gosek initiated discussion regarding a proposed local law to prohibit the spraying of herbicides on city properties. After a lengthy debate at committee, his attempt to bring the matter to the full council was stymied. However, the mayor pointed out Monday that it’s pretty much a moot point. The city already has a spraying policy in place, adding that for any spraying to be done, the proposal must first be approved by the council.
