The 24 Oswego State athletic programs were recognized once again for their outstanding commitment to community service, as they were recently awarded the second place Award of Merit from the National Administrators of Division III Athletic Directors, sponsored by Jostens. This award is the 11th earned by the Laker teams in the past nine years.
The Oswego Rotary Club and Oswego Sunrise Rotary presented a check to Oswego City School District Superintendent Dr. Dean Goewey to help fund the Rotary Interact club at OHS.
Wilkes University awarded 369 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees when it held its winter commencement ceremony on January 21 after the completion of the fall 2017 semester.
For most communities across the county, the fourth Sunday of April is recognized as Arbor Day. It is a day when family, friends and neighbors come together to plant trees and more importantly, raise awareness of the role trees play in our environment. Locally, Arbor Day means even more.
The Winona Forest Recreation Association kicks off its season of winter events Jan. 28 with the Empire State Snowshoe Championship Race and the Stone Wall 5K Walk/Run through the sprawling 9,000-acre state forest in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. “The Winona Stone Wall has evolved into one of the Northeast’s premier snowshoe events,” said race director Rich Shumway.
On Jan. 18, Oswego Rotary and Baldwinsville Rotary were honored with community service awards through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Central New York Chapter. Last year, both clubs participated in Great Strides, the CFFs largest national fundraising event with local walks in their respective communities.
The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will continue its Winter 2018 Sunday Woodland Snowshoe Wanders programming in February, on Sundays, February 4, 11, and 18, at 2 p.m.

Linda Eagan, administrative director for Fulton Block Builders gave a report on its inaugural 2017 projects and results at the January meeting of the Fulton Lions Club. Fulton Block Builders is a neighborhood revitalization program that helps both homeowner and property owners recover part of the cost of their property improvements.
