Local Support Helps Bring ‘Teacher Who Couldn’t Read’ To Celebrate Literacy Volunteers’ 25th Anniversary

Shown is renowned author and national literacy advocate, John Corcoran, who will be the keynote speaker at Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County’s (LVOC) 25th Anniversary Celebration. The event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the American Foundry, Oswego. For more information, contact the LVOC office at 342-8839 or visit www.lvoswego.org.  Corcoran graduated from college, was a high school teacher for seventeen years, and developed over $50 million in real estate, all while masking his inability to read. Corcoran is the author of “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read” and “The Bridge to Literacy,” as well as the founder of the John Corcoran Foundation, whose goal is to raise awareness about the importance of literacy.

Hoffman Blasts Growing Deficit As Death Sentence Of Debt

Doug Hoffman, the conservative Republican candidate for Congress (NY-23) today blasted the Democratic controlled Congress and the Obama administration for what he termed a “death sentence of debt” that is strangling the economy and fiscal well being of this nation. The Essex County CPA and small businessman made his comments in response to the White House announcement that the federal deficit will jump by $ 9 trillion over the next decade.

Novelis Can Collection Night At Fulton Speedway This Saturday, August 29th

On Saturday, August 29 Fulton Speedway will host Novelis Can Collection Night in hopes that the community will contribute 100 cans each and in return receive $5 off their general admission ticket into the race track. Novelis along with the Fulton Speedway will be raffling off door prizes as well to those who bring in their aluminum recyclable cans as an extra bonus.

Fulton Schools Come Off State’s “Needs Improvement” List Today

The state Education Department Wednesday will give Fulton schools a reason to celebrate the opening of a new school year. For the first time since 2001, every building in the district will meet state standards and be listed as “in good standing”.

“We’re very excited to celebrate” the news, said Betsy Conners, Executive Director for Instruction and Assessment, who got the news from the state in advance of an expected public announcement today.
