For many, the United Way’s slogan – Live United – is much more than just a catchy phrase. It is a way of life. At Wednesday’s United Way of Greater Oswego County’s annual campaign kick off, some members of the community shared personal stories of why they became involved in the United Way.

The work in progress has been the topic of lengthy discussion twice before at the committee level. Each time councilors took no action on the matter, opting instead to continue working on the plan. On Tuesday night, Third Ward Councilor Nate Emmons presented an updated version of the proposal. The current plan would still be in effect from November 15 through March 31. The mayor, at his or her discretion, can extend it based on weather conditions.

After weeks of drills at various locations around the county, young tennis enthusiasts recently had the chance to have some fun with their new skills. “The carnival is our end of the year celebration! We invite all of our children that have attended our program to come relax, have fun, and play tennis. It sort of culminates the summer not only for the kids but for my AmeriCorps members as well,” said Shane Evans, supervisor of the USTA Tennis Program at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.
The Oswego County Health Department reported today (Aug. 31) that the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus was found in a mosquito sample collected during routine testing on Toad Harbor Road in West Monroe. The sample was collected Aug. 24 by the Oswego County Health Department in the same area that EEE was found last week.
Nearly 100 people packed the ballroom at the McCrobie Building on Monday night to hear potential upgrades to the Port City’s waterfront. Several members if the public expressed their vision of what the waterfront should be in the future. Suggestions ranged from a beach to infrastructure improvements to activities and more. They hope to come up with a plan by early next year.
The Viking ship, Draken Harald Hårfagre, is entering the Oswego Canal today (Aug. 29) and will journey through to the Barge Canal system making its way to Albany. From there it will follow the Hudson River to New York City.
