Oswego Councilors Agree To Seek Lower ‘Bed Tax’

After a lengthy discussion this week, the Common Council voted to reconsider Resolution No. 220 of 2013, which authorized the mayor to execute all documents necessary to state legislators and other state agencies to request authorization for and empower the Port City to adopt a local law for the purpose of imposing a city of Oswego room occupancy tax law. This week, they amended the rate down from 5 to 1 percent.

The family wants to make sure the public is educated about EEE, so that no other family has to go through what they have. The ultimate goal is to one day have a vaccine available to the general public.

Law Enforcement Carries Torch For Special Olympics

Sophia Graves carries the Flame of Hope in the local Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg as they head to the Fulton Police Department.For more than 30 years, police officers throughout Oswego County have participated in the annual “Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.” On Monday, officers representing the cities of Fulton and Oswego, the county, state police and Oswego State University carried on the tradition.  The LETR for Special Olympics is the movement’s largest grassroots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world.

Fulton Man Killed in mobile home collapse; second man injured

At about 10 a.m. on June 11, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a personal injury accident that occurred at 19 Waterview Road in the Town of Oswego. When deputies arrived, they found that 44-year-old John David Halstead of Fulton had been in the process of dismantling a mobile home when the roof of the home suddenly fell on him.

Century 21 Galloway Realty Night at the Races on June 15, which features the first driver autograph session of the season presented by Entergy as well as the Grossman St. Amour Make-a-Wish Foundation 2-Seat Supermodified ride, will now see four feature events on the schedule with 150-laps of racing for only $15.

Oswego Council Votes to Reduce Fire Department

John Geraci of the firefighters' union talks things over with city officials following Monday's meeting. From left are Geraci, council president Ron Kaplewciz, Mayor Tom Gillen and Dave GranoffThe Common Council voted 4-3 in favor of eliminating four positions from the fire department. The positions are currently vacant, but the firefighters’ union says they were in the 2013 budget to be filled to keep the staffing at safe levels. If they can’t work things out with the city, the union may file a grievance against the city to return the positions to the budget.

Out of State Motorist Arrested For DWI

On June 9 troopers out of SP Fulton observed a vehicle with South Carolina registration stopped along the shoulder of State Route 3 in Volney. Troopers stopped to check on the welfare of the driver, 35-year-old Sean S. Smith of West Columbia, SC. During the interview, troopers observed that Mr. Smith appeared to be intoxicated.
