It takes several people to help a community remain safe and prosperous. That is what Fairgrieve Elementary School second grade students took away from attending a recent Community Day discussion where a hairdresser, physical therapist, factory worker, police officer and firefighters spoke about their roles and responsibilities in creating a community.
On November 5 at 1 p.m., gourd artist Graham Ottoson will teach about gourds and gourd crafting at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center. She will then lead participants in creating a beautiful night light.
Seventh and eighth graders from Oswego Middle School’s accelerated science program recently had the opportunity to experience first-hand the rigors and benefits of exploratory field work in a partnership with SUNY Oswego. In a full-day field trip, students were able to interact with professors and undergraduates at the Rice Creek Field Station as well as tour the college’s chemistry department labs.
Hosted at CiTi, industry partners Huhtamaki, Sunoco, Novelis, Davis-Standard and The Fulton Companies set up booths with materials and demonstrations. Representatives shared information about the mission of their company and the jobs they are always looking to fill.
An over-the-top comedic murder-mystery is set to soon bring laughs – and clues – to Mexico High School. “The Bold, The Young and The Murdered” will be presented at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 in the school’s auditorium after several weeks of student preparation.
Palermo Elementary is turning the page when it comes to encouraging and promoting family literacy. As a continuation to the school’s year-long reading initiative, the Parent-Teacher Club recently hosted its annual Snuggle up with a Good Book event, which drew about 40 people to the school cafeteria.
North Volney Methodist Church will hold a scalloped potato and ham supper on October 19. Serving will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, a handful of volunteer firefighters educated students from grades pre-kindergarten through six on the following basic measures: never hide during a fire because firefighters need to see where people are, if trapped in a room stay near the door or a window, never go back inside for an animal or toy, smoke detectors should be placed high and people should go low while exiting to a safe meeting place.
