Though the 2017-18 school year doesn’t officially start until September, that hasn’t stop students from Lura M. Sharp Elementary School from flying through pages at the school’s summer reading program. The program provides individualized learning to students with varying levels of reading gaps.

When Kerrie Schremp’s 2016-2017 first grade students at Lanigan Elementary advance to second grade and learn the Common Core unit on community, they’ll already have a solid foundation from her classroom. The veteran teacher recently hosted a class picnic at Volney Town Park because her most recent class formed such a strong bond with her, as did their parents.

Held from July 10 to Aug. 4 at Granby Elementary School, the summer program engaged sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in project-based math, science and humanities classes to help them master grade-level standards. With the “Life Lab: Growing Minds, Building Community” program theme, students engaged in deeper connections to their peers, teachers and community.

The Sandy Creek Central School District is looking to stock the Comet’s Closet before a major clothing giveaway which is scheduled to coincide with the school supply distribution event on August 21. There is an especially high need for children and teen clothing.

North Volney Methodist Church will host an Anything With A Motor Show on the church grounds on August 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All things with a running motor are welcome at this show, no matter if it is old or new. The more unique the better.

The Mexico Academy & Central School District’s Learn to Swim program has made a splash with hundreds of participants this summer. From June 5 through Aug. 18, 500 eager swimmers will have attended one or more of the two-week sessions, which take place for 45 minutes Mondays to Fridays.

Each time The Butler Did It Players performs the Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, they donate a portion of the proceeds from their photo booth to a local charity. For their September 30 show at The Kallet Theater, they have chosen to donate the proceeds to the Salmon River Hockey Association.

Public nature programs at the Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center will continue into the fall. Also scheduled are the following creative Nature Inspires programs.
