Oswego Rotary welcomed a new president at the Changing of the Guard ceremony on June 27. Carrie Penoyer, a lifelong resident of Oswego County, assumed the position for the 2017-18 Rotary fiscal year.
New York Sea Grant and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation today (July 11) announced the availability of $200,000 in funding for Great Lakes resilience projects. Up to $25,000 per project is available from the New York Great Lakes Basin Small Grants Program administered by New York Sea Grant in partnership with DEC.
Bishop’s Commons in Oswego will host two evening classes on gardening led by Cornell Cooperative Extension Certified Master Gardener Bonnie Amedio. In the classes, Amedio will address topics and offer gardening tips on how to treat sick foliage, perennials, and annuals, soil tips, and how to take care of houseplants in the summer months.
The recipient for 2017 is Jennifer McGrew. She is currently an employee of NOCHSI. She is working on her bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Twenty years ago, she won the Kathy Ellis Scholarship and studied at St Joseph’s School of Nursing.
On July 3, Fulton resident John W. McEachen competed in the 2017 USA-Taekwondo National Championships, which were held at the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan. He won his two sparring matches in the 40-49 year – 68 kg Black Belt sparring division with scores of 18-8 and 13-8, and won a gold medal.
“We are so proud of our little Warriors,” said Superintendent Christopher Staats. “Thank you for sharing your children with us and allowing us to be part of their educational journey.”
The four-year varsity standout for the Warriors recently signed her letter of intent to study and play college hoops at the Buffalo-based college. She will trade in the Hannibal purple for the Spartan red when she begins her post-secondary education in August.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County is still accepting registrations into its Summer Shooting Sports Program. This program is open to all girls and boys ages 12 to 19 who are interested in in shotgun and muzzleloading or rifle. The programs will be conducted as a six-week course concluding with a field day.
Recording artist and movie actor, also plays and musicals Michael Paul Callahan will perform in the musical Grease as Teen Angel. It’s directed by Tom Briggs with musical director Robert Dumas and choreography by Stephfond Brunson The show will be at The Francis Marion Brown Theater, Oswego Civic Arts Center. July 8 at 8 p.m., July 9 at 2 p.m., July 14 at 8 p.m., July 15 at 8 p.m., and July 16 at 2 p.m.
