The Great Lakes Research Consortium, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Great Lakes Program, announces the award of $136,591 for six research projects that address priority areas in the Great Lakes Action Agenda for New York State.
The Michael A. Maroun Elementary School gymnasium was abuzz with excitement as nearly 65 students showcased their experiments at the annual science fair. Students from kindergarten through fourth grades created projects pertaining to chemistry, biology, earth science and physics.
St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence in Oswego will host a workshop that is open to the public entitled, “Entering Their World-Living with Dementia the Easy Way” on May 18 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The workshop is for family members, loved ones, or caregivers who are on the journey of a Dementia diagnosis of a loved one.
Climate change was in focus during the annual Earth Science Honors Research Symposium held May 4 at John C. Birdlebough High School. Susan Sharp’s sophomore honors students presented in-depth research projects to an audience of family and friends.
“They’re the kindest people around,” said Kelly Rainville, an Oswego resident. “If they can help an animal, they will.” The Oswego County Humane Society, a not-for-profit corporation located at 29 W. Seneca St. in Oswego, doesn’t operate like a normal animal shelter. Instead, the organization is a series of volunteer foster homes that care for an animal until they are adopted. Rainville has fostered animals through the Oswego County Humane Society since last August. She said she has had a good experience with the organization and thinks the foster system works.
The Fulton Public Library will feature a Night of Romance on May 11 from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Local authors will be attending the event, which includes a meet and greet and a book signing.
Incoming freshmen and their parents gathered in the Lockwood Auditorium for the annual transition night, which is designed to give students the knowledge and tools needed for a smooth transition from middle school to high school.
“We’ve had, in the city of Oswego, a 300 percent rise in heroin and opioid admissions since 2010,” Mayor William Barlow said. “That tells us that factually there is a presence of drugs in our community and there is a problem with addiction.” A new program went into effect letting residents turn in their dangerous substances to the police while in return receiving medical intervention and treatment. According to Lt. Zach Misztal, one person has taken advantage of this program so far. “I have run into this individual one time since they have entered the program and was met with what appeared to be a sincere thank you,” he said. “So, as cliché as it sounds, if it helped one person, [it is] well worth it.”
Nearly two dozen Hannibal High School students recently made a commitment to continue serving their community and school as they were inducted into Key Club. During a ceremony in the Hannibal Central School District’s Lockwood Auditorium, school administrators and staff lauded the inductees for their contributions and citizenship.
In recognition of its ongoing commitment to students, staff and visitors, the Phoenix Central School District recently received top honors for safety measures on school grounds. The titanium-level School Safety Excellence Award was presented by the Utica National Insurance Group during the 37th annual School Safety Seminar.
