New Vision Students Work To Find Solution for Tobacco Usage in Oswego County

According to the most recent Oswego County Community Health Assessment, “The County has the highest adult smoking rate and obesity rate among all its neighboring counties.” With the thought that prevention is the best medicine, New Vision students decided to investigate the percentages of tobacco use in Oswego County Schools. Working in groups from multiple districts, individuals implemented student surveys in their home districts.

It was a bull market at Lura M. Sharp Elementary School when 17 teams from the school’s fifth grade classes invested $100,000 each in theoretical money into company stocks as they participated in The Stock Market Game. At the end of three months, seven of the teams had realized a profit, and one team stood out as the Stock Market Game champions.

Phoenix Central School District To Host Oswego County Olympiad Invitational

After students in the Phoenix Central School District attended last year’s Special Olympics in Cicero, PCSD personnel were so inspired that they wanted to start their own event for Oswego County students. That idea, first pitched to administrators by physical education teacher Angie Neiss, quickly blossomed and will become a reality when Phoenix hosts the Oswego County Olympiad Invitational on May 14.
