The finalists visiting Oswego hail from near — high schools in Oswego and Onondaga counties and 29 states in all — and far — Albania and Azerbaijan, Turkey and Tanzania, and 46 other countries. Judges advanced a most-ever 328 projects for the finals, each submitted by up to two students, among a record-shattering 842 entries.
Oswego County BOCES students enrolled in the New Vision Allied Health program recently showcased their diabetes knowledge by developing a website and creating informational literature about the disease.
Former professional wrestler-turned-motivational speaker Marc Mero used his wealth of life experience to inspire Dennis M. Kenney Middle School students during an assembly Friday morning.
Mero, who gained notoriety as a wrestler with the World Wrestling Federation in the early 1990s and later struggled with addiction and adversity, brought his message of hope to Hannibal students.
A storytelling project that began at the classroom level in each of the Fulton elementary schools culminated with a district-wide festival recently, as nearly two dozen students entertained friends and family with a variety of tales. Divided into two groups based on grade level, the students immersed themselves in each story as they gestured and acted out tall tales, short stories, myths, legend and fables.
ARISE & Ride for Ramps will take place on Saturday at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego. The event raises funds to provide ramps for families in Oswego County who cannot afford them. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with past ramp recipients there to cheer on the participants.
It has come to my attention that Oswego County BOCES is scaling back on some of the automotive trades classes offered to adults. BOCES trains adults who have lost their jobs, giving them the opportunity through classroom education and “hands-on” knowledge/training to learn new skills in the auto repair business. Now that BOCES is undergoing a renovation project, only 5 of the current 8 garage bays will be available to youth and adult students.
Three graduates of Auburn/Cayuga Community College have been honored by the college’s Alumni Association. The 2014 Alumni Awards were presented to Richard J. Knaul ’63, Melanie Trexler ’75 and Terry M. Wilbur ’08 at a special reception as well as at CCC Commencement on May 18.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico is saddened to announce the death of Trooper Christopher G. Skinner. Trooper Skinner was last assigned to the Traffic Incident Management Unit (TIM Detail), Troop C, Delaware County.
On Wednesday, Kelly M. Hartz, 47, of Williamstown, appeared in Oswego County Court, where she was sentenced to five years probation upon her conviction for Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, a Class E Felony. As part of her sentence, she was ordered to pay $9,597.18 in restitution to Oswego County DSS over the next five years.
The musical play is based on the 2001 DreamWorks animated film “Shrek” and follows the adventures of a cantankerous Ogre named Shrek, his friend a talking donkey and the beautiful princess Fiona.
