The Sandy Creek Varsity Cheerleaders were named Section III Class C Champions recently at South Jefferson, outscoring teams from Bishop Grimes, West Canada Valley and Herkimer to take the top spot.
Seventh grade students at Fulton Junior High School have been reading the novel “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, a book that tells the story in alternating sections of real life experiences of Salva Dut in 1985 and a reality-based fictional character Nya in 2008.
Thirty-six robotics teams from all over New York State competed, by invitation only, on January 25 for the title of State Champion at the Northern NY VEX Toss Up State Championship. Two teams from Oswego dominated the competition during the qualification rounds. Both teams made it to the semi-finals; both teams won special awards. And, one of them won a coveted spot in the next level of competition.
The Women’s Fellowship of Minetto United Methodist Church will be serving a romantic candlelight dinner on Valentine’s Day, February 14. Serving will be at 6 p.m. at the church. The menu will be spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, Italian bread, ice cream sundae, and beverages.
The Oswego County Farm Bureau is pleased to host the February Coffeecake Meeting at the Oswego County Federal Credit Union, Route 3 North in Mexico. It will be held on February 3 at 1 p.m. This month’s speaker will be Josh Hornesky of the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Plans are under way for the 33rd annual Memorial Day Salute event to be held May 24 at the Fulton Community Center. The theme for the celebration will be “Showing Gratitude To Our Veterans.” Jim Weinhold, Veteran of the Year, will serve as grand marshal of the Saturday parade.

Oswego County BOCES Exceptional Education teacher Mary Ryan has been making the most out of the cold weather by conducting science experiments with her students. After learning about the physical properties of water, and seeing a video on Reddit.com on how hot water freezes faster than cold water, Ryan’s class tested the theory.
A course catalog of the 2014 spring adult educational opportunities at Oswego County BOCES is now available. The catalog has been mailed to residents in Oswego County and contains information about the literacy and training opportunities catered to adult learners who have been displaced, are considering a career change, are interested in re-entering the workforce.
The Oswego County Emergency Management Office announces that the system of emergency notification sirens surrounding the three nuclear power plants at Nine Mile Point will be tested during the week of February 3 through 7. Tests will be conducted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
