Before the American Civil War (1861-1865) Oswego County, NY, played an active role in the Underground Railroad, a movement which concealed and forwarded escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. Oswego County provided more men to Union Army regiments, on a percentage basis, than any other county in New York State.
The Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Dollars For Scholars organization will hold a fundraiser at the Cicero Five Below store on September 6, 7 and 8. Stock up on back to school supplies, including books, sporting goods and T-shirts; everything is priced at $5 or less. Ten percent of the total dollars spent will be donated back to APW Dollars for Scholars.
The website, http://apwelementary.com, will be updated regularly with PTSA-sponsored events, and flyers sent home will be posted under the Internet Backpack tab. Parents interested in helping out at an event, or joining the PTSA, can print out a membership form online.
All events start on the Mexico High School athletic fields. The fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. on the track and the 5K Cider Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. on Liberty Street. The first 125 registrants for the 5K run/walk receive a free long-sleeved T-shirt, designed especially for the Cider Run by Custom Novelty Prints.
First time winners have become synonymous with the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS event at Oswego Speedway, and the form held true on Saturday night as rookie driver Danny Abt cruised to the title victory worth $1,500 presented by POMCO Group. Abt snuck underneath Dennis Rupert to complete the event’s first circuit and would go on to out hustle a hard charging Mike Bruce on a late race restart to claim the victory, becoming the first rookie driver to win the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS since Dan Ferlito in 1999.

Local youths taking part in Oswego Hospital’s MASH Camp learned how to suture like a surgeon and also tried their hand at compounding medicines using candy. These skills were just a few of the many the campers, who will enter either the eighth or ninth grades this fall, experienced during the two-day camp designed to introduce healthcare careers to the youths.
The signs were purchased through state funds sponsored by State Senator Patty Ritchie and are part of the “Fight the Bite” public education program to help raise awareness about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. In all, 276 signs were provided to public health departments in Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Madison counties.
The Oswego Players’ 75th Anniversary Dinner will take place on August 23. As of this writing, a few tickets are still available for $35 each. Entertainment for the evening will be a play written by Oswego’s own Dr. Michael Nupuf based on the book, “O.R.,” written by Steve Abbott and Dr. John Fountain.
