Civil War Historian will speak at Fort Ontario Aug. 14

Fort Ontario State Historic Site will host a lecture by Civil War historian Thomas Ebert at 7 p.m. Aug. 14 in the Enlisted Men’s Barracks. Ebert will discuss common myths of slavery and emancipation from the perspective of both the North and South. Oswego County provided more men to Union Army regiments, on a percentage basis, than any other county in New York State.

Stock up on back to school supplies, including books, sporting goods and T-shirts; everything is priced at $5 or less. Registration Now Open for 23rd Annual 5K Cider Run and Walk

All events start on the Mexico High School athletic fields. The fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. on the track and the 5K Cider Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. on Liberty Street. The first 125 registrants for the 5K run/walk receive a free long-sleeved T-shirt, designed especially for the Cider Run by Custom Novelty Prints.

Rookie Danny Abt is Oswego Speedway’s Mr. Small Block Supermodified

First time winners have become synonymous with the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS event at Oswego Speedway, and the form held true on Saturday night as rookie driver Danny Abt cruised to the title victory worth $1,500 presented by POMCO Group. Abt snuck underneath Dennis Rupert to complete the event’s first circuit and would go on to out hustle a hard charging Mike Bruce on a late race restart to claim the victory, becoming the first rookie driver to win the Mr. Pathfinder Bank SBS since Dan Ferlito in 1999.

Students Take Part in Hands-On Activities at Oswego Hospital Mash Camp

Local youths taking part in Oswego Hospital’s MASH Camp learned how to suture like a surgeon and also tried their hand at compounding medicines using candy. These skills were just a few of the many the campers, who will enter either the eighth or ninth grades this fall, experienced during the two-day camp designed to introduce healthcare careers to the youths.

Signs remind outdoor lovers to take precautions against mosquitoes

The signs were purchased through state funds sponsored by State Senator Patty Ritchie and are part of the “Fight the Bite” public education program to help raise awareness about West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis. In all, 276 signs were provided to public health departments in Oswego, Onondaga, Oneida and Madison counties.
