The Oswego County Health Department announces June is Rabies Awareness Month in New York State. The staff is working with the NYS Department of Health to raise public awareness about the dangers of rabies.
At the last county legislature meeting, I asked if the contract with IQS is going to be rebid. Like always, there was no answer. The contract expires in August and it can either be rebid or extended to IQS for another year. If it’s rebid, we have a real opportunity to save the taxpayers a significant amount of money.
Through the Expeditionary Learning’s Common Core ELA Curriculum, FJHS students read the novel A Long Walk to Water and learned about a world that is on the continent of Africa, in the country of South Sudan, and during a time when children as young as six fled their villages and left their parents to escape war and starvation. In conjunction with the novel and classroom activities, former ‘Lost Boy’ Chol Majok was invited to share some of his personal experience with the students during a recent visit.
The students in Candy McCann’s first grade class at Granby Elementary School are in the digital age and created interactive presentations to prove it. The students finished their end-of-year projects but instead of turning in a paper report each student created a PowerPoint presentation of their research.
Students at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Elementary School ended the year with a trip around the globe and they didn’t even need to leave their school. The school’s physical education teaching team in cooperation with the APW Parent-Teacher-Student Association coordinated the first ever World Field Day for students in universal pre-kindergarten through grade six.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like OCO to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. Funded through the New York State Education Department, the Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to all children 18 years and under.
The annual reorganizational meeting for the Oswego City School District Board of Education will be conducted at 5 p.m. on July 1 at the Education Center Board Room.
Setting goals and helping others achieve their goals is always rewarding. For former Morningstar Residential Health Care resident David Jones, reaching his goal was not just rewarding, it was life-changing.
The first concert in the Oswego Summer Sunset Concert Series will be held Wednesday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Breitbeck Park in Oswego. These concerts are provided free to the public by The City of Oswego and The Musicians Union of Oswego County.
