The Common Council will soon be considering a resolution that will result in the elimination of positions within the fire department. There are currently four newly created vacancies that were included in the 2013 budget and anticipated to be filled. This comes as a surprise, based on the fact that we recently suffered cuts to daily staffing and made concessions through contract negotiations to accommodate the 2013 budget.
Jared Campbell’s Blue Project was an interactive musical presentation that combined current musical styles, relatable characters and a strong upbeat positive message when he performed for students at Granby Elementary School.
Jacqueline M. Thorpe is among the Leadership Oswego County class of 2012-2013. The class is designed to help train the next generation of local leaders while through education, community involvement and volunteerism.
I want to thank two organizations for their volunteering to provide cleanup and maintenance of our city parks. Over the years, the Fulton Lions Club has worked at C.V. Abbott Playground at Hulett Park, the playground at Voorhees Park and four years ago, adopting Oswego Falls Park. The second organization is the Fulton Alliance Church Building Bridges Committee’s children’s group called the Community Kids.
June 1 was the opening of CNY Art Gallery located at 357 State St., Fulton. Many artist displayed some remarkable work in the new home of the gallery. Congratulations to everyone for an amazing job, not just the art work, but the gallery too!
Path Through History is an attempt by Governor Andrew Cuomo to promote New York State’s history and culture through tourism and bring tourist dollars to all parts of the state. There is a website, paththroughhistory.ny.gov, so people can plan day trips and/or weekend getaways that explore the history and culture of New York State. By exploring the Paths visitors can experience a Revolutionary War battle, discover some of the state’s and nation’s greatest natural wonders or relive some of sports greatest moments.
The dune fest educated students about the area including the dunes, animals and ecosystems and was put on through a combined effort through the New York Sea Grant, the State Department of Environmental Conservation, and New York’s State Park System.
Students at G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton have reason to celebrate. For the fifth time in the history of the Oswego County Academic Youth (OCAY) League, the school clinched the title of overall champion. OCAY League was organized in 1997 with the idea that academics merit a standing comparable to athletics.
Beginning this weekend, the Thruway will use its electronic Variable Message Signs to increase driver awareness. Senator Ritchie had asked for the state Thruway Authority’s help in the wake of a series of horrific motorcycle crashes that claimed the lives of a number of local bikers. From June 1 to 8, the Thruway will flash the messages, “Watch for Motorcycles” and “Share the Road” on signs boards across its system.
People coming to share in the thrill of the races can help support their neighbors on Saturday. The Oswego Speedway is once again hosting representatives of ARISE and allowing them to accept donations for the Oswego County Ramp Program. ARISE will also be promoting the June 8 ARISE and Ride for Ramps event at Fort Ontario.
