SUNY Oswego’s Mentor-Scholar Program greeted more than 180 guests at its fourth annual Community Dinner on Oct. 22 at Oswego Middle School. Mentor-Scholar is a collaborative effort between the Oswego City School District, Fulton City School District and SUNY Oswego that provides local middle and high school students with the academic and social support of college mentors throughout the academic year.
The Oswego County Health Department is offering influenza immunization clinics for people age 19 and older weekdays at the Nick Sterio Public Health Clinic, 70 Bunner St., Oswego.
At a recent Fulton Sunrise Rotary meeting, Jeff Schremp of Fulton Youth Hockey, accepted a donation from Rotarian Doug Stevens on behalf of the club. Jeff spoke about the program which runs from Oct 1 through March 15 and is staffed entirely by volunteers.
Tickets are now available for the Lake City Masonic Lodge No. 127 and Lake City Victoria Order of the Eastern Star No. 205 all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet benefit and raffle for the Oswego Community Youth Orchestra. The breakfast will be December 21 from 8 a.m. – noon at Lake City Lodge No. 127, 765 E. Seneca St., Oswego.
Salmon River Hockey and Figure Skating hosts public skate every Friday and Saturday from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. The doors will not open until 6:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday public skate will run until March 14, 2015.
Gregory Peddle was the guest of Oswego Rotarian Mark DuFore recently. He spoke about Net Neutrality and the future of the Internet related to open access. Net Neutrality is the principle that Internet Service Providers and the government should treat all information on the Internet equally.
Laughter and joy overflowed into the hallways of Granby Elementary School recently, as ventriloquist Sylvia Fletcher and her puppets stopped by to give students a lesson in anti-bullying. Fletcher’s performance was designed to teach students the importance of not bullying and feeling comfortable with one another. Through comedic messages, the program reinforced the significance of creating a climate in the school in which students feel safe and comfortable.
Hannibal resident Gary D. Thompson Jr. is making a run for Hannibal Town Council. My goal if elected is to bring life back into Hannibal, give people a reason to stay within the community and give people a reason to come in. The reality is, it will be harder to hold the line on our taxes if there is no revenue being created, he said.
An initiative sponsored by the American Red Cross, Holiday Mail for Heroes collects holiday cards, personally signed by donors, to distribute to soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines at military bases, veterans’ hospitals and other locations to let them know they are remembered and appreciated back home.
More than 150 students and faculty walked through the pouring rain to assist United Way in its mission to end hunger, help youth succeed and improve the overall health and well-being of Oswego County. Organized by Vega, the Women’s Junior/Senior Honor Society, the walk-a-thon raised $745.
