On Aug 2, more than two dozen volunteers participated in the pulling and removal of the invasive water chestnut from areas around the historical Battle Island area of the Oswego River. Volunteers were a diverse group including NY Sea Grant Launch Stewards and people from Jefferson and Onondaga counties – and visitor from Colorado.
Carolyn Handville, program coordinator for Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program Partnership, has announced that NOCHSI’s Mexico Health Center has joined the Cancer Services Program’s network of over 25 health care provider offices throughout Oswego County. The Mexico Health Center is conveniently located in the town of Mexico, 5856 Scenic Ave.
Although it is still summer, the Salvation Army is looking ahead to its annual Red Kettle Campaign, which begins November 14 and ends December 24. Contributions raised through this campaign are critical to our operations which serve those in need within Oswego County throughout the year.
The Minetto United Methodist Church will host a free dinner on August 24. Serving will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The menu will be hot meatball sandwiches, French fries, vegetable, and dessert. Donations are not expected but will be accepted.
Dozens of community members and visitors filled the Clubhouse Tavern for the United Way’s ninth annual Harborfest Breakfast. Committee members and volunteers kept busy cooking and serving breakfast all morning as those eager support Stuff-A-Bus gathered to enjoy breakfast and support a worthwhile project.
Oswego native Owen Benjamin and his buddies, renewed for a third season of “Sullivan and Son,”invent a new beer called “Owenbrau” on Turner Broadcasting System. Maybe some of our local establishments can get the recipe for “Owenbrau” and serve it in Oswego.
Recently, the Oswego Country Club women’s Wednesday morning 9-hole league held a member/guest tournament. They conducted a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds benefiting Human Concerns, Inc., Oswego’s local food pantry.
As William Shakespeare said, “All the world’s a stage,” and SUNY Oswego’s Artswego Performing Arts Series has accepted the challenge, planning six dance, music and theatre events in sometimes-surprising places during its 2014-15 season. Audiences will experience the lineup of touring artists and ensembles at venues as different as an Oswego historic site and a lakeside circus tent. The unusual approach is a creative response to the temporary closure of Waterman Theatre during the extensive renovation of Tyler Hall on the SUNY Oswego campus.
August is New York Central Railroad Month at the Oswego Railroad Museum, which will celebrate the 139 years of the NYC with models, artifacts, photos and videos. The museum is located at 56 W. First St., in the Historic Maritime District and is open to the public from noon – 5 p.m. every weekend until Labor Day – plus some special weekends.
