In his new book, Dr. Alok Kumar, a professor of physics at the State University of New York Oswego, describes and documents the development of scientific and mathematical concepts in South Asia centuries — and in some cases millennia — before they were rediscovered or adopted in Europe.

State Senator Patty Ritchie visited a crew from CNY Roofers Local 195 recently at a construction site just south of Oswego County. Among those working was Patrick Yonker, a veteran who landed his job at a recent job fair hosted by Senator Ritchie.

U.S. ports throughout the Great Lakes uniformly saw increased tonnage in several cargo categories during the month of June. “The Port of Oswego has accepted shipments of approximately 16,000 metric tons of aluminum in June contributing toward a year record projected to be 100,000 tons in 2014,” said Zelko Kirincich, executive director at the port.

Students of Literacy Volunteers and their tutors were recognized at the annual picnic

Through a collaborative project with Oswego Economic Development Corps, Oswego County Opportunities, Catholic Charities and the Oswego County Department of Social Services, free financial literacy courses are being offered to help individuals in our community to better understand and improve their finances.

Julia Ludington, daughter of Judge Spencer and Ann Ludington, of Fulton, was awarded the Sandy and Sylvia Squires Scholarship this year.

Lakeside Artisans, 191 W. First St., continues its tradition of hosting a variety of creative visual artists to demonstrate their materials, techniques, and processes on Thursday evenings during the farmers’ market. On August 7, Michele Southgate will demonstrate her use of fibrous and textured papers in her mixed media artwork.

On July 26 from 8 – 11:30 a.m., The Club House Tavern, 126 W. Second St. will host a breakfast in support of United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign. Sponsored by Eagle Beverage and The Club House Tavern, and coordinated by a committee co-chaired by Dan and Liz Dorsey of Eagle Beverage, the breakfast is open to the public.
