There were 46,659 indicated reports of child abuse and neglect in New York State in 2012, according to Christine Deyss, executive director of Prevent Child Abuse New York. During April, many local organizations are spreading awareness, including the Oswego City School District who is spreading child abuse awareness and raising funds with their own “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign.
The program of direct aid seeks to attract and retain undergraduate students to SUNY campuses who have demonstrated high academic achievement and can demonstrate that they will contribute to the diversity of the student body.

Sarah Skinner of Oswego recently completed her lacrosse career at the University of Rochester with three goals and three draw controls against host Bard College. She finishes ranking second all-time in draw controls and sixth overall in caused turnovers for the Yellowjackets.
At its March 27 meeting, the Sandy Creek Central School District Board of Education heard a presentation from the district’s architectural firm SEI Design Group. SEI was given the district’s Building Condition Survey to form the basis of their next project.

Dr. Mary Walker will be at Oak Island, Waterloo, NY. Dr. Walker – a.k.a. Marilyn Rowsey Dirk – a resident of Oswego, has been educating the public on the work that Dr. Walker dared to accomplish during the American Civil War. At 2 p.m. on May 24 Marilyn will take to her role and talk about the trials and accomplishments of Dr. Mary Walker at Oak Island Pavilion Two.
On May 10, Superintendent Paul Lear will lead a walking tour of the 1814 Battle of Oswego at Fort Ontario State Historic Site. The tour will begin at 1:45 p.m. at the tunnel entrance of the old stone fort. It is free and open to the public.
