David Owens, a SUNY Oswego junior fine arts major, will present his work-in-progress, “Twelve in Oswego: An Artistic Interpretation of Time and Place,” on April 9 at the college’s Quest symposium. For every month of the year, Owens finds an ideal location to photograph a place in the city of Oswego and creates paintings based on the photos.
Lakeside Artisans, 191 W. First St., is offering a class in Hand Painted Silk Scarves, another in its series of creative educational experiences for adults in our community. On April 29, from 10 a.m. to noon, Cindy Schmidt will offer a class in how to use the resist and dye to decorate a silk scarf.
In conjunction with Child Abuse Prevention Month the Oswego City Schools will be conducting a “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign during the month of April. Donations will be accepted and paper pinwheels sold throughout the month, and pinwheel gardens will be planted in front of the schools as well as at the Education Center.
Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, and the New York Association for Pupil Transportation. It is estimated that 50,000 cars illegally pass New York State school buses daily.
A granite bench has been donated by Shawn Boshart of Oswego County Monuments. The bench, valued at $1,260, is just one of the many items that will be available for bid during the Oswego Community Christian School’s seventh annual auction to be held Saturday from 1 – 4 p.m.
Adam C. Gagas has been elected to the Board of Directors of Pathfinder Bank, according to Chris R. Burritt, Chairman of the Board.
The Phoenix Central School District is accepting petitions for the board of education for the 2014-15 school budget vote and board of education elections in May. Three three-year seats on the Phoenix Board of Education are up for election this year, those of incumbents Paul Gilchriest, Debbie St. Phillips and Keith Watkins.
April is National Poetry Month and the Fulton Library is having a celebration. In partnership with local writer Jim Farfaglia, the library will be offering a four-week class entitled, “Celebrating Poetry!” This free program will take place on the four Saturdays: April 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Oswego County Opportunities is launching its “Bling, Fling and Swing” Raffle with three exciting prizes: a diamond/sapphire ring; an overnight getaway for two to Vernon Downs Casino; and Canyon Combo tickets for two from Wonderworks at Destiny USA.
Proceeds raised from the raffle will benefit OCO services and programs that address hunger needs in Oswego County.
For the month of April, Recognizing Oswego County is seeking nominations in the area of Mental Health Awareness and Support. A potential nominee might be an agency that provides mental health counseling or an individual who advocates to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.
