With a desire to give back to the community, Phoenix Central School District staff and faculty joined forces with United Way of Oswego County again this year and contributed to the organization’s annual campaign. According to Mary Stanton, principal at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School, this year’s giving effort was one of the most successful to date.
To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be full-time and have achieved a minimum 3.6 semester and cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
The program, sponsored by the History Channel and Time Warner Cable and coordinated by Congressman Dan Maffei, introduced students to servicemen and women of all backgrounds. Six veterans and current service members discussed their experiences and fielded questions from fifth and sixth grade students Dec. 16.
In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, students at Emerson J. Dillon paused to perform holiday songs during their winter concert.
The week before Christmas, students at JCB High School volunteered to pack boxes of food at the Fire Station on Elm Street. Students at Maroun, EJD and JCB held a food drive in the month of December to benefit the Phoenix Lion’s Club.
Holiday music filled the air for shoppers on Dec. 18 when EJD students performed at Great Northern Mall. Students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade performed for over an hour, to the delight of onlookers.
Sandy Creek students in kindergarten through fifth grades got into the holiday spirit Dec. 19. They sang nearly a dozen songs in front of an audience of classmates, teachers and family members.
Led by outside education expert Penny Ciaburri and Hannibal school administrators, the committee has met three times since October to talk about goals, concerns and ideas to make the Hannibal school system a “destination district” for those seeking a premiere learning environment.
As Hannibal Central School District students become acclimated with the new Common Core curriculum, parents are learning about the new standards as well. District administrators hosted the second Common Core Parent Information Night of the school year Nov. 18, with roughly two dozen parents in attendance.
Sounds of the holiday season filled the Hannibal High School auditorium Dec. 3 as more than 30 members of the senior chorus performed in concert.
