Oswego County BOCES students train with Mercy Flight

December 6, 2011 Submitted article

Cadets from the Oswego County BOCES Public Safety and Justice Program participated in a ground school training session with Mercy Flight Central on Monday, November 28. Chris O’Brien, a flight paramedic outreach specialist from Mercy Flight, spoke to the high school juniors and seniors about the benefits of air medical transportation, the services they provide, and the trained professionals of their critical care response team. In addition, O’Brien spoke about the appropriate utilization of air medical services and what is expected of emergency ground responders to aid with patient transportation. For example, O’Brien above illustrates the area of approach, exit points, and danger areas of the aircraft for ground responders. Career and Technical Education students in the Public Safety and Justice program often have an interest in pursuing professional training in the areas of police science, emergency management and firefighting and often serve as the emergency ground responders responsible for requesting air medical transportation and establishing a safe, secure and well-marked landing zone area for air medical transportation.
