Sandra Scott Travels: Once you go to Mirbeau, you have to come back for another visit

Dickens & FriendsSometimes I find it necessary to getaway but not far away – just away from my surroundings including the computer and housework. Recently, John and I did just that. We went to Mirbeau Inn & Spa in Skaneateles which had been on our bucket list since they opened in 2000. It was perfect. The snowfall the night before had turned Mirbeau into a frosted Christmassy village.

Sandra Scott Travels: Haiti isn’t like everywhere else

The Observatory's expansive viewWe totally loved our visit to Haiti. We found it was less expensive to fly into Santo Domingo then fly to Port-au-Prince from there. The biggest problem was connecting between the two Santo Domingo airports so hired a nice young man to drive us thus avoiding the taxis. It was expensive but smooth and easy, which we appreciated.

When John and I were in Nebraska we learned more about the impact of the Homestead Act of 1862 on America’s Westward Movement. The video “Land of Dreams” told how the lure of free land and a better life drew1.6 million people from all over the world to unsettled parts of America. The romanticism touted by promoters did not mention the hardships and other problems. Homesteaders had to “Prove up” the land by building a home and planting crops.

Actor alum to reprise ‘A Christmas Carol’ at SUNY Oswego 40 years later

Actor Carl Whidden, left, will present "A Christmas Carol" at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, in Hewitt Union ballroom at SUNY Oswego. He will play all the roles in the Dickens classic, including Ebenezer Scrooge, the one he played while a student in 1973. Here, a chastened Scrooge hoists Tiny Tim for the end-of-play blessing. The Rosemary Nesbitt production 40 years ago featured dozens of area children.Actor and SUNY Oswego alumnus Carl Whidden will present “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens — performing all of the characters himself — at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, in Hewitt Union ballroom at SUNY Oswego. Whidden’s evening in Oswego offers a fresh approach to the story. The veteran artist and 1975 Oswego graduate brings Dickens’ characters to life, from nocturnal spirits to the boy who fetches a turkey on Christmas morning.

‘Highly accomplished’ trumpeter Brian Shaw to appear with college ensembles

Trumpeter Brian Shaw, who has played both modern and Baroque trumpet across North America, will join SUNY Oswego student ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and 6 for free public concerts in Tyler Hall's Waterman Theatre. Shaw, a member of the Louisiana State music faculty, will reconnect with his host, Eric Schmitz, percussionist, fellow Eastman School of Music alumnus and a SUNY Oswego music faculty member.Gifted trumpeter Brian Shaw will appear Dec. 5 and 6 in free SUNY Oswego concerts featuring college ensembles. Shaw, a member of Louisiana State University’s music faculty, will perform with the college’s Big Band in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5, in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre. At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6, in Waterman Theatre, Shaw will perform with the college Wind Ensemble in Fisher Tull’s “Rhapsody.”
