Performing arts series at SUNY Oswego to blend current, classic fare

The season opens Sept. 7 with two performances of the Cashore Marionettes.From bluegrass to the Bard, the 2013-14 Artswego Series at SUNY Oswego offers a diverse slate of artists and performing arts experiences to area audiences. “Whether tastes incline toward music or theatre, traditional or contemporary expressions, we’ve covered the bases,” series director John Shaffer said. “And we’ve held ticket costs far below levels seen at premiere venues around the country — big-city opportunities at small-town prices.”

After all it is the city that gave birth to the name “Rock & Roll.” No matter your music preference you will find a place to keep the beat going. The musical term “Rock ‘N Roll” came from disc jockey, Alan Freed, who used the term to describe the upbeat rhythm & blues records he played on WJW, a Cleveland radio station.

The building of the Erie Canal is considered an engineering marvel on the scale of the pyramids. In the early 1800s when New York governor, DeWitt Clinton proposed building a waterway that would connect the navigable Hudson River to Lake Erie by a 300-mile canal through the wilderness, Thomas Jefferson said, “It is a splendid project and may be executed a century hence… but it is a little short of madness to think of it at this day.”

John and I had a wonderful guide, Bo Nu, a lovely young lady from Korea who was in her senior year at CIA. I asked her why she chose CIA and she said, “It was the best culinary college that offered a Bachelor’s Degree.”
