Caitlin Sawyer of Oswego, a public relations and dance student at Hofstra University, joined hundreds of college students from 45 institutions across New York State at the capitol building in Albany to advocate for support of student financial aid programs as part of New York Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day on Feb. 11.
Dan Tryon, a SUNY Oswego technology education faculty member, said the robotics team he helped form with another parent last fall did not dream of making it to the VEX Robotics World championships in April. Recognizing the fast-growing robotics challenges as a “gateway” to drawing secondary-school students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Tryon and Dr. Mark Humphrey last October put together Freezing Code, a team of eighth- to 10th-graders, with long-term academic goals in mind.
To qualify for the dean’s list, students must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.
Coming off their 2013 State Championship, the 17-member guard had a terrific performance and was one of only six finalists selected for the finals competition in the Scholastic A Class. This was the first time in the history of the program that Oswego made a finals competition at a WGI event.
Oswego High School members of the Class of 2014 are being accepted at colleges and universities from throughout the nation.
The Bingley Brothers Circus rolled into town Feb. 3, making a stop at Volney Elementary School to entertain dozens of kindergartners. Students used their imaginations as the auditorium transformed into The Big Top. “The Happy Circus” introduced the audience to different musical instruments and animals, all while teaching students to follow directions and work together as a group.
The Oswego District Masons are forming a new DeMolay chapter and welcomes young men to join ages 12-21, as well as qualified adult advisors. An initial informative program regarding DeMolay was held on February 9 at Hiram Lodge 646 Maple Ave., Fulton. DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives.
The Friends of Oswego County Hospice are beginning a year-long education campaign regarding the benefits of Hospice care for people with a life-limiting illness. Made possible through a grant from the Richard S. Shineman Foundation, this education program will target residents of Oswego County and the professional medical community.
Oswego Rotary hosted Melanie Proper from the Child Advocacy Center of Oswego County recently. Ms. Proper is a mental health counselor at the CAC. The center is a safe, child-friendly site for the investigation, prosecution and treatment of child abuse.
