Robotics contests provide STEM ‘gateway,’ says SUNY Oswego educator, coach

Members of the Freezing Code team adjust their custom robot between rounds Jan. 25 at the VEX Robotics State Championships at SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus. Coached by SUNY Oswego technology faculty member Dan Tryon and senior technology education major Justin Montois, the team partnered with Six Sigma of Granville High School to win and qualify for the world championship in April in Anaheim. Recognizing the fast-growing robotics challenges as a “gateway” to drawing secondary-school students to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, Tryon and Dr. Mark Humphrey last October put together Freezing Code, a team of eighth- to 10th-graders, with long-term academic goals in mind.

Volney kindergartners enjoy ‘The Happy Circus’

The Bingley Brothers Circus rolled into town Feb. 3, making a stop at Volney Elementary School to entertain dozens of kindergartners. Students used their imaginations as the auditorium transformed into The Big Top. “The Happy Circus” introduced the audience to different musical instruments and animals, all while teaching students to follow directions and work together as a group.

New DeMolay Chapter needs a few good men

The Oswego District Masons are forming a new DeMolay chapter and welcomes young men to join ages 12-21, as well as qualified adult advisors. An initial informative program regarding DeMolay was held on February 9 at Hiram Lodge 646 Maple Ave., Fulton. DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives.

Shineman Foundation Partners with Friends of Oswego County Hospice for Community, Professional Education

The Friends of Oswego County Hospice are beginning a year-long education campaign regarding the benefits of Hospice care for people with a life-limiting illness.
